According
to a recent report, Dell's anticipated effort to jump the smartphone market was
unavailing so far.
Rumors flew through the web for some time now saying that Dell might work on
Windows Mobile smartphones and as it turned out, it's true - Dell was/is working
on smartphones but is suffering from "a lack of interest" among cellular
carriers (most likely U.S. American carriers), according to a research note
published on Friday. According to this report, Dell was showing-off some Windows
Mobile and Android based smartphones but have so far failed to distinguish
themselves from a growing field of competitors.
Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu wrote: "From our conversations with supply
chain and industry sources, it appears that it ultimately came down to lack
of carrier interest," and continues that "Dell has not abandoned its effort
to release a mobile device, though it has 'gone back to the drawing board'
to design a more distinct model, which may involve making related
acquisitions."
At this point it's uncertain if and when Dell will release its first
smartphone and if it will either run Windows Mobile or Android or both. However,
after Dell left the Pocket PC business
some years ago, it lost a lot of credibility.
