CANCELED: Mozilla stops all Firefox Mobile Developments for Windows Mobile

The Firefox Mobile aka Fennec team has been building versions of Firefox Mobile for Windows Mobile for quite a while which nevertheless haven't made it to a final product yet. However, Mozilla's expectation was that Microsoft would be doubling down in the mobile market, especially with its new mobile operating system aka Windows Phone 7 Series. Nevertheless, since last week's MIX10 we know that - even if Windows Phone 7 Series is based on Windows CE 6 - Microsoft will only support managed code (either build in Silverlight or XNA) instead of native code. Therefore Stuart Parmenter announced on his blog that the Fennec team is putting its Windows Mobile developments on hold:

While we think Windows Phone 7 looks interesting and has the potential to do well in the market, Microsoft has unfortunately decided to close off development to native applications. Because of this, we won't be able to provide Firefox for Windows Phone 7 at this time. Given that Microsoft is staking their future in mobile on Windows Mobile 7 (not 6.5) and because we don't know if or when Microsoft will release a native development kit, we are putting our Windows Mobile development on hold.

That's not an ever lasting farewell as Paramenter hopes "that we do see Microsoft provide us with a way to build Firefox for Windows Phone 7". However, in the meantime the Fennec team will continue to focus on the things that it can control, namely building a great consumer browser for Android and Maemo.

Cheers ~ Arne
