DISCONTINUED: ChevronWP7 Labs reached 10,000 downloads - closes its doors

Back in November, ChevronWP7 Labs relaunched after the original ChevronWP7 service was turned-off before - when the developers behind ChevronWP7 agreed with Microsoft to work on a different model to relaunch it again. And now, it looks like ChevronWP7 Labs is also gone - but this time forever (?). Right on new year's eve, it was announced that the ChevronWP7 team and Microsoft agreed to sell 10,000 unlock tokens only (something which was, as far as I know, completely unknown and never said) and that the 10,000th token was sold on January 1st. Since both parties agreed to stop ChevronWP7 Labs at the 10k mark, it's currently impossible to buy new tokens to unlock Windows Phone 7 smartphones which allows to side-load apps.

The fact, that the ChevronWP7 team sold 10,000 unlock tokens in less than 2 months clearly shows that there's a strong need to get Windows Phones unlocked and I don't think that all these tokens were sold to developers only. In my humble opinion, also end-users bought the tokens to get their devices unlocked, to benefit from homebrewed apps which might never make it to Microsoft's Marketplace or might be rejected for which reasons ever.

Unfortunately, it's not yet possible to automatically transfer tokens from one device to another one but a bought token is only valid for the device it was activated with. This means, if the service isn't continued anytime soon, that developers and users won't be able to unlock their Windows Phones again, if switched to a different Windows Phone

Cheers ~ Arne
