Back in October 2009, when Microsoft announced and launched Windows Phone 6.5, the company also introduced Windows Marketplace for Mobile and My Phone, two exclusive new services for Microsoft's last Windows Mobile range of smartphones. However, since Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7 last year, it was clear that sooner or later they they was coming where Microsoft is to kill the services. And indeed, yesterday Microsoft sent out notifications to its customers where they where informed that Microsoft will be discontinuing the My Phone service for Windows Mobile 6.x and will also discontinuing the Windows Marketplace for Mobile web site.

The Windows Marketplace for Mobile web site at will no longer be available starting on July 15, 2011. After July 15, 2011, users wont be able able to browse, buy or download applications for Windows Mobile 6.x phones via the Windows Marketplace for Mobile web site.
However, and that's the good news for all the HTC HD2 customers and other Windows Phone 6.5 users out there, the Windows Marketplace for Mobile service will continue to be available on Windows Mobile phones and users will continue to be able to browse, buy and download applications for Windows Mobile 6.x on their phones.

Starting on August 7, 2011, Microsoft will begin moving My Phone content to Windows Live SkyDrive. SkyDrive is Microsoft's free online storage service that helps users to access and share files such as photos and Microsoft Office documents. But also contacts, calendar entries, text messages and photos will be moved to SkyDrive and once moved, users will be able to access this content by logging into SkyDrive using the Windows Live ID that they used to register for the My Phone service. However, other content types, including videos, music, documents and favorites will not be moved from My Phone to SkyDrive.

On October 6, 2011, the My Phone web site at will no longer be available. On this date, users won't no longer be able to log in to the My Phone service to access content stored to the My Phone service. However, Microsoft said it will continue to store My Phone content for one additional year and physical copies of content can be shipped upon customer's request until October 5, 2012.

Microsoft has updated is knowledge base where affected users can learn more about the My Phone service shut-down, including information about content moving to Windows Live SkyDrive and how to save other content to local PCs
