Following yesterday's news that Google might work on a new "Nexus TV" set-top box and my remark, that Google's Chromecast is less successful but at the moment only something for the tech savvies, Google today announced that new apps available for Chromecast. Beginning today, Chromecast owners can enjoy action sports, news, music videos and more with the addition of VEVO, Red Bull.TV, Songza, PostTV, Viki, Revision 3 and BeyondPod. But Google hasn't added online services only but users can also cast personal media straight to the TV using Plex, Avia or RealPlayer Cloud apps. To start casting from these apps, the latest versions for Android or iOS needs to be installed; these apps will be rolling out over the next few days.

However, to stream local content from a NAS or computers, Plex and Avia requires the pro versions which aren't free of charge; on top of this, Plex requires a Plexpass which costs US$ 3.99 per month. This isn't obvious, neither from the screen shot above nor from the Chromecast Android app.

And while the Google Chromecast is yet not widely available, German VoD service WatchEver confirmed on Twitter recently, that it's planning to release a full featured Android app anytime soon which should have Chromecast support sooner or later as well. Maybe WatchEver knows something, Google hasn't unveiled yet - the wider availability of Chromecast because such a service integration wouldn't make sense for some grey imports.

Cheers ~ Arne
