FAITH: Sony Ericsson stands behind the Xperia X2 - announces Software Support Schedule

While the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, Sony Ericsson's second Windows Mobile smartphone, faced some serious delays it's said to begin rolling out globally now and Sony Ericsson announced at its Xperiancers blog the planned "Xperia X2 software support schedule". According to Sony Ericsson, "it's only fair that customers know what kind of support we'll be giving the phone in the months to come" and Sony Ericsson admitted "that we attracted some criticism for this on the X1 and we're not going to go there again with the X2". Now that's what I call some honest and open word, so this is - according to Sony Ericsson - what Xperia X2 customers can expect in terms of software upgrades:

  • In March, we'll launch our first upgrade (MR1). It will upgrade Windows Mobile from 6.5.1 to 6.5.2 (which will improve both the stability and usability of the device), it will bring in the use of video telephony, an FM radio and it will introduce fast GPS to get a quicker fix. As well as all this, MR1 will upgrade a lot of the applications in the phone to improve speed, usability and fix any bugs we find.
  • The second update will go live in May and this will be a big one as it moves the Xperia X2 onto (yesterday's introduced) Windows Mobile 6.5.3. This is a significant upgrade in terms of usability, performance, power management and the browser experience.

Maybe the most interesting information is the postscript where Sony Ericsson makes clear that the Xperia X2 "won't ever go onto Windows Mobile 7, it won't support the hardware".
Okay, now we know what the supported Windows Mobile 7 hardware isn't - and it's just a matter of time to learn what's the supported hardware is. But anyway - at least Sony Ericsson seems to know what Windows Mobile 7 requires which might lead us to a Windows Mobile 7 powered "Xperia X3"? Time (or Mobile World Congress 2010) will tell!

Cheers ~ Arne
