Connecting the Pocket PC Phone Edition to GPRS is pretty easy if you know how to do it. This is a general step-by-step which works for all Pocket PC Phone Edition devices and for all GSM/GPRS carriers world wide.

Creating a new GPRS connection
Before you can dial into the GPRS network of your cellular operator, you have to setup the Pocket PC Phone Edition to dial the proper connection.

  • Tap [Start] -> [Settings].
  • Tap the [Connections] tab to open the connection settings.
  • Tap the [Connections] icon.
  • Tap on the first [Modify] button [below Internet Settings].
  • Now you get an empty list of all your Dial Up Networking connections.
Tap [New...] o create a new connection.
  • Give your connection a name and select the GPRS modem of your Pocket PC Phone Edition called [Cellular Line (GPRS)].
  • Leave the [Baud rate] as it is (19200). This baud rate doesn't have any effects on the real GPRS connection speed.
Also you don't need to use [Advanced...] settings in most cases, so give it a try first without adding any DNS servers etc. and tap [Next]
  • Now you need to enter the most important part. It's telling the Pocket PC Phone Edition which APN (Access Point Node) should be used. The APN is pretty similar to a Proxy Server and operators might use more than one/different for different services. Typically an operator has up to three APNs within the network: one for Internet, one for WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and maybe one for MMS [Mobile Multimedia Messaging System).
Depending on which service you want to create a connection for, you have to use the appropriate APN name. Your operator or its web site can give you the APN names.
This APN have to be entered into the [Access Point name] field like:

Tap [Finish] to close the setup screen.

  • Your new connection is added and stored.
Close the screen by tapping [ok]
  • Now you are ready to go to dial your first GPRS connection.

Dialing a GPRS Connection
If you have everything configures, make sure that your devices are connected (if you use a cable) and ready to go (align the infrared port of your Pocket PC Phone Edition to the infrared port of your cell phone or make sure that Bluetooth is switched on on both devices).

A connection can be dialed in different ways and the Connection Manager will try to take care. E.g. if you open a URL from your Pocket Internet Explorer which requires a connection, the GPRS connection should be dialed automatically; same if you synchronize your POP3/IMAP4 E-Mail account or if you login to MSN Messenger.
However, you can also force the Connection Manager to dial manually by tapping [Connect]:

If your connection was successful you a notification bubble will appear.

To disconnect simply open the notification bubble again by tapping the two arrows on the Task Bar and tap End.

That's it, you are ready to enjoy the true wireless Internet through GPRS now - wherever you are and wherever you go!

Cheers ~ Arne
