Today, at Internationale Funkausstellung (international consumer electronics fair in Berlin, Germany) Deutsche Telekom Laboratories launched a new mobile information service called Qiro. With Qiro users can receive individualized information about their surroundings via their cell phones. Qiro displays current events, cinema listings, restaurants around the corner as well as the location of friends who are currently in the neighborhood. With Qiro for the first time dynamic information such as the locations of the railway’s call-a-bike service or the friend-finder service are linked with localization and city information.

At the IFA, in hall 6.2a at the Deutsche Telekom stand, visitors can get information about the latest service and download it onto their cell phone. At the moment, Qiro is available for a broad range of T-Mobile Windows Mobile MDAs and SDAs as well as for Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets. It is not necessary to buy an additional GPS device. Within a few minutes Qiro is installed on your cell phone and ready to be used. Its use is free; only the mobile Internet access is charged.

When developing Qiro the experts from T-Laboratories took the new trends in society into account. "We are becoming more and more mobile and travel a lot. At the same time we want to be connected with our friends and make flexible arrangements", observes Christian Wolf. "With Qiro I can find my friends and I can see – while on the move – what is happening and being offered around me - as a local as well as a traveling businessman", adds Roland Schwaiger. Wolf and Schwaiger are both in charge of Qiro.

Qiro is also interesting for business customers. Restaurants can lodge their daily menus and retailers can attract attention to their outlets by placing logos on the surface. Qiro users can also receive special offer alerts from selected providers.

"Qiro is the visible result of our result-oriented development in Deutsche Telekom Laboratories", stresses Peter Möckel, Head of Deutsche Telekom Laboratories. "With Qiro we have developed software for mobile devices which integrates valuable services for the user in one platform."

It is planned to transfer Qiro to one of Deutsche Telekom Laboratories' spin-offs which will be established by the end of the year.

Deutsche Telekom T-Laboratories is Deutsche Telekom’s research and development institute and is based in Berlin. At T-Laboratories - an associated institute of the Technical University of Berlin - top scientists from all over the world are doing research to develop new services and solutions for Deutsche Telekom customers.

The Qiro client can be downloaded for free from the Internet. At the moment, the service is available in German only.

Cheers ~ Arne
