Remember when I told you last October that Google had plans to fork Android for wearables? Well, Google made it official now as "Google Wear" and it makes sense for Google since wearables are a hot topic for the industry and one of "the next big things" after smartphones have reached its penetration in developed market. As Google said in a blog posting, "we're only at the beginning [with mobile technology]" and that "we've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with mobile technology". That's why Google said it's so "excited about wearables" because "they understand the context of the world around you, and you can interact with them simply and efficiently, with just a glance or a spoken word".

Android Wear is said to be a project that extends Android to wearables and Google said that it's starting with the most familiar wearable - watches. Going well beyond the mere act of just telling the time, a range of new devices along with an expansive catalogue of apps will give Google Wear users:

  • Useful information when needed most. Android Wear shows info and suggestions needed, right when they are needed. The wide variety of Android applications means you'll receive the latest posts and updates from your favorite social apps, chats from your preferred messaging apps, notifications from shopping, news and photography apps, and more.
  • Straight answers to spoken questions. By just saying "Ok Google" and ask questions, like how many calories are in an avocado, what time a flight leaves and the score of the game. Or it will be possible to say "Ok Google" to get stuff done, like calling a taxi, sending a text message, making a restaurant reservation or setting an alarm.
  • The ability to better monitor health and fitness. Hitting te exercise goals with reminders and fitness summaries from Android Wear, favorite fitness apps can give real-time speed, distance and time information on the wrist while out for a run, cycle or walk.
  • A key to a multiscreen world. Android Wear lets its user to access and control other devices from wrist by just saying "Ok Google" to fire up a music playlist on a supported phone, or cast a favorite movie to the TV.

For developers, there's a new section on developer.android.com/wear focused on wearables. Starting today, there's a download of Google's Developer Preview available so developers can tailor their existing app notifications for watches powered by Android Wear. Because Android for wearables works with Android's rich notification system, many apps will already work well.

Last but not least, Google unveiled that it's also already working with several consumer electronics manufacturers, including Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung; chip makers Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, Mediatek and Qualcomm; and fashion brands like the Fossil Group to bring watches powered by Android Wear later this year.

Cheers ~ Arne
