Previously, Sony Ericsson said in its product blog that it planned to roll-out the eagerly awaited Android 2.1 upgrades for its line of Xperia X10 smartphones late Q3 (currently, all Xperia X10 smartphones run the pretty much outdated Android version 1.6). However, a recent update on the company's product blog officially confirmed now what was already rumored - the plan for the added features and Android 2.1 step-up still holds but unfortunately Sony Ericsson needs a couple of more weeks before they are ready to start the roll-out. However, Sony Ericsson has also unveiled now what users can expect from the Xperia X10, Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro upgrades.

The key changes and enhancements for the different products are the following:

Xperia X10

  • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
  • HD video recording with continuous autofocus for high quality videos
  • New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
  • 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
  • Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when friends are online

Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro

  • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
  • Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more
  • New backup and restore application with extended content back up
  • Automatic synchronization of contact pictures between Facebook and phone book
  • Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in messages

Sony Ericsson now plans that - from the end of October - customers will be able to get the device upgrades. However, it also made clear that not all customers will get the upgrades at the same time but that it will be a process of roll-out which depends on carrier settings as well as language configurations.

Cheers ~ Arne
