Announced back in July, I finally got the chance to play a little bit longer with Nokia's Windows Phone camera flagship, the Nokia Lumia 1020, which went first on sale in the U.S. The Lumia 1020 is the Windows Phone successor of the Symbian-based Nokia 808 and like its step-brother it's featuring Nokia's unique 41 megapixel PureView technology. When launched, no other Windows Phone was as powerful as the Lumia 1020 which runs Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 and is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm S4 CPU. The European version supports quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE at 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, quadband UMTS/HSPA+ up to 42.2 Mbps at 850/900/1900/2100 MHz as well as pentaband LTE up to 100 Mbps at 800/900/1800/2100/2600 MHz; the AT&T version features slightly different bands, optimized for North America.

Other connectivity includes Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi a/b/g/n, NFC as well as the so typical FM radio. Last but not least, the 1020 comes with a couple of sensors which includes an ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor and magnetometer.

The eye-catching auto focus main camera features Nokia's PureView technology and has a resolution of 41 megapixel; it features leading ZEISS optics with six physical lenses, delivering crystal clear pictures even in low light conditions. This allows to also capture blur free videos with stereo sound; even at the loudest concerts thanks to Nokia Rich Recording, which handles sound pressure levels six times louder than conventional smartphone microphones. The 1020 comes with a new optical image stabilization mechanism and a resolution of up to 7712 x 5360 pixel. It's powered by Nokia's own Nokia Pro Camera software and comes with a Xenon flash for still images and LED flash for video. It supports a newly introduced features called dual capture which means that the Lumia 1020 is simultaneously taking a high resolution 38 megapixel image for endless editing opportunities as well as it creates a 5 megapixel picture that is easy to share to social networks or via E-Mail. Furthermore, it features a secondary front facing 1.2 megapixel camera for sefies and video communication.

Lumia typical is the Lumia 1020's touch screen which features a 4.5" AMOLED WXGA (1280x768) PureMotion HD+, ClearBlack touchscreen with high brightness mode - increasing sunlight readability and super sensitive touch By default, the Lumia 1020 comes with 32 GB flash storage and for Windows Phone a rather untypical configuration of 2 GB of RAM, which is nevertheless required to handle the massive 41 megapixel photos.

It measures 130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4 and weights, including the 2,000 mAh battery, 158 gram

The Nokia Camera Grip is available as a separate accessory and complements device features usually reserved for stand-alone cameras with a universal 1/4 inch -20 UNC tripod mount and an additional 1020 mAh built-in rechargeable battery for 55 minutes more shoot time.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is available in yellow, white and black.

Cheers ~ Arne
