Late
last December, O2 Germany
announced the upcoming launch of the
O2 Xda Guide,
which is planned for mid of February. Running on running Windows Mobile 6.1
Professional, the Xda Guide (which is based on the
HTC Iolite) will replace O2
Germany's Xda orbit 2. The Xda Guide is announced to come in an O2 exclusive
design and is powered by a Qualcomm MSM 7225 CPU at 528 MHz. The design features
quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA in addition to
Bluetooth 2.0-EDR, WiFi b/g and aGPS. The Xda Guide comes with a 2.8" QVGA
touchscreen and sports a 3.2 megapixel fixfocus camera (but no front facing second camera
for video telephony). The 256 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM can be expanded by microSD
cards. Last but not least, the O2 Xda Guide runs HTC's
TouchFLO 2D
user interface instead of the more fancy
TouchFLO 3D
user interface.
O2 Germany ships the Xda Guide with a 1 GB microSD card which holds
TomTom Navigator 7
(with preinstalled maps for Germany, Austria and Switzerland) as well as the device
is shipped with a car cradle and a car charger.
Quite new for an HTC and O2 Windows Mobile smartphone is the so called
"Footprints" button,
which is also part of the TouchFLO GUI. Footprints lets you photograph locations, straight from the HTC TouchFLO
application. If GPS is available, the location will be added to the information
and the user can add some comments to this Footprint location (more about
Footprints in an upcoming preview). The second application button which looks
like a compass directly starts TomTom Navigator 7:
