End User Benefits:

  • Windows XP Luna Look & Skins: Visually Pocket PC 2002 is simply stunning when compared with Pocket PC. Cool skinning and watermarks on the Today page, great Luna icons, and cleaver use of bolding in fonts. It all adds up to a much stronger visual experience.

  • IR Send/Receive more Useful: Finally it is a all in one solution. Point, send and it's done. No more fiddling with “receive”.

  • OBEX: Finally you can send/receive information with Palm users! No more need for additional programs. Also mobile phones are supported now!

  • PIM Enhancements: View by company in Contacts, view attendees in Calendar, see multi-line description in reminders, see next appointment in date/time balloon,, improved category support, etc.

  • Improved Inbox Client: Its faster, more robust, more feature rich and easier to set up (the “Auto Configure” feature alone could going to win some reviews. Users will finally have an app they can rely on to do serious

  • Inbox Folder Sync: Finally you are not just limited to your Inbox when you do desktop sync!

  • Device Sync Status: Now you know the last time you synced and you get much better status while syncing remotely.

  • Desktop Pass Through: You can now browse the web, check your IMAP (automatically even), Hotmail IM.

  • Spell Checking: In Pocket Word and Inbox - A valuable feature.

  • Improved PIE: Download is way faster, better fit to screen, better HTML 3.2 support - the total browsing experience is just way better.

  • WAP Support: No longer do you have to buy, install and run a separate application to browse your favourite WAP sites. PIE does it all - and does it seamlessly. However, it’s mostly WML support not the WAP standard by itself.

  • Transcriber in ROM: No need for additional installations.

  • Some Bug Fixes: Fixing the “Storage CardMy Documents” problem, the midnight “wake up” problem, file browser resetting to “My documents” problem, and a view others.

  • If all that isn't enough for you, there are dozens of more features such as Word Count in Pocket Word, Volume in the Navigation Bar, improved one hand navigation, improved category functionality in PIM, and the list goes on and on.

Enterprise Benefits:

  • Terminal Services Client: Access your desktop PC from your Pocket PC 2002

  • Virus Checking Hooks: Finally the start of real virus security for the PDA space.

  • Enhanced LDAP: Pocket PC 2002 is much stronger than Pocket PC before.

Final Conclusion

All together I’m really happy with the new Merlin. For sure, there is always space to improve but in general I have to attest Microsoft’s Pocket PC developers that they did “A Job Well Done”! However, Pocket PC 2002 is built for the next generation of devices. That means a StrongARM support only, SH3 and MIPS CPUs aren't supported any longer.

If you will be able to update your Compaq iPAQ or UR There @migo isn't sure at all. The Compaq and Palmax own a flash enabled ROM and a StrongARM CPU but any upgrades have to be offered by Compaq or Palmax/UR There themselves, not by Microsoft. Today it's also not clear if a possible update will be free of charge or not. I used a special Microsoft iPAQ version which doesn't support all iPAQ features at least. This drivers have to be provided by the OEMs directly.

What is Merlin not? Merlin isn't a new Windows CE version like Windows CE 4.0. It's more or less a dramatically update like from Windows 95 to 98se or Me. But it's not a Windows 98 to Windows XP like upgrade. This will be Talisker, the new Windows CE platform, Microsoft is currently working on.

Cheers ~ Arne
