Today, at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference 2010 in Seattle, Microsoft's Senior Vice President Andy Lees unveiled further details of the upcoming release of Windows Phone 7. In his keynote, Lees addressed a wide range of key features but at the end of the day, Microsoft hasn't announced anything dramatically different or new. However, Lees again mentioned that the industry (or Microsoft?) had a problem with fragmentation in the phones but with Window Phone 7, developers will have a very consistent hardware target. And Microsoft seems to be confident that Windows Phone 7 will be a success (after the failure of KIN) because Lees said in his keynote that "We (Microsoft) are back and we are back with something very different and innovative"!

While Microsoft has still not unveiled an exact launch date (for me holiday season is the summer holiday while for other regions in the world it's around Christmas), Lees again confirmed that that Windows Phone 7 will launch at holiday seasons. But nevertheless, finally Microsoft has given some further details. Microsoft is working closely with its partners (ODMs and carriers) to determine exactly where and how Windows Phone 7 will be available regionally but Lees confirmed that Windows Phone 7 will be available from carriers first.

And while it's yet unknown how new Windows Phone 7 smartphones will look like, it seems to be confirmed that the launch partners will be HTC, Samsung, LG and Dell only since Lees mentioned them explicitly during his keynote. Therefore it looks like other hardware partners like Sony Ericsson (which is also a confirmed Windows Phone 7 partner) will follow-up later (maybe early next year during the Mobile World Congress).

Also confirmed now are the supported Windows Phone 7 languages; Windows Phone 7 will initially support 5 languages: English, French, German Italian and Spanish while the Windows Phone Marketplace will available in 17 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and United States so here we go - that's the expected countries where Windows Phone 7 might lands first!

I expect to get further, more detailed and exclusive information in the upcoming days! Stay tuned.

Cheers ~ Arne
