The folks from Burr Oak in Canada added now the Pocket PC Phone Edition support to their latest project - Phone Today:

Phone Today is a Today Screen plug-in which displays the status of your connected GSM phone, or xda/MDA device.
Phone Today works with any GSM phone which is connected to your Pocket PC through a serial connection, and which supports GSM 07.05 and 07.07 AT+C commands, or with the new xda/MDA devices.

As far as I can see, also the hp WDA should be supported because the xda and the WDA use the same GSM stack. However Phone Today is a nice little tool as it gives you a fast and easy overview of your current network connection.

Changes from 0.98.4 to 0.98.5

  • Support for XDA/MDA
  • Support for playing of sound on new SMS message
  • Option to disable Phone Today when SMS app is launched
  • Fix launch of SMS apps which are shortcuts
  • Add icon which is displayed when Phone Today is refreshing
  • Added Manual Refresh support
  • Device battery status is displayed when Sierra Aircard is used

While you don't see on the Phone Edition if GPRS is available and allowed, Phone Today provides you this information right from the today screen. However, the Signal Strength indicator isn't required but nice to have. Also helpful is the Network name on Today screen. This is even more useful if your are on International Roaming where it is even more important to see which network is currently used.

To use Phone Today with your Pocket PC Phone Edition use "XDA/MDA" as Phone and "Cellular Line" as Line.

Phone Today is still Beta and therefore free to download. However, the author accepts PayPal donations which disables the reminder that your copy isn't registered today:

You can register Phone Today for $5.50 US via PayPal.
Once you've registered Phone Today you will receive a registration code within 24 hours.
If you like Phone Today, it works fine for you and you're happy with it and you'd like to support future development efforts, we'd ask you to pay the $5.50 US registration fee. If you don't like it, you're not happy with it or it doesn't work for you, please don't pay for it until you do, you are and it does :-)

This US$ 5.50 are really worth and Phone Today is part of my standard Pocket PC Phone Edition setup now. I really like it even if there is still space for improvements which is normal for every software and even more for a superb working Beta version!

Cheers ~ Arne
