On my last week odyssey through the world wide web I found an announcement of TenGo Free. I don't like to use the soft-keyboard of my Pocket PC to write E-Mails or SMS, so I decided to have a closer look at TenGo Free.
On the website I found an incredible video (link to a WMV video), of an female typist which is crazy-fast typing with TenGO, so this was really impressive.

After the installation you have to register on the website with your name, E-Mail and the serial-number displayed on your device. Within one minute you'll get your activation code by mail. O.K. here we go lets have a look at the TenGo Settings. There are some registration information (on the left side) and some settings like "space after selecting a word" or "Set as default keyboard":

Now lets see how it works, lets type some words in "Word Mobile". My first impression was, hey this is looking pretty nice, but is it really functional?

As you can see in my video its not that easy as it seems, specially on an 2.8 inch device like the HTC Prophet, but nevertheless its more comfortable and faster than typing with the standard keyboard, and hey I'm using this the first time.

By typing on the "fn" symbol you'll have easy access to the standard operations like cut, copy, paste, delete, etc. Same functionality by typing on the "@" symbol, the special characters will be displayed.

The "123"button got two functionalities, by typing it on time, the numbers 1 to 0 will be displayed in the same area like operations and special characters. By typing it the second time, a new keyboard layout will be shown (this looks similar to the Windows Mobile standard keyboard).

Feature List:

  • Pocket PC 2003 and Windows Mobile 5.0 compatible
  • Built-in Dictionary with18,000 words
  • Auto non-predictive (display actual character typed)
  • Smart apostrophe words (Contraction) handling
  • On-tap delete word function (not single character)
  • Create non-dictionary word using "scribing"
  • Accented character input
  • Delete word from dictionary
  • Set TenGO as default keyboard

Final Conclusion

Finally I would say this a useful enhancement for your device, surely you have to get used it. But when I think back in time, I have to get used to type on a pc keyboard with ten fingers, and this method is really faster then the "two-finger-search-system". TenGO Free has many god features which makes mobile writing much easier so feel free to test it and post your expressions in the forum.
