RUMOR: Is Sony Ericsson jumping the Windows Mobile bandwagon?

Taiwan-based and always well informed Commercial Times today reported, that HTC (High Tech Computer) has received ODM orders for Windows Mobile-based smartphones from Sony Ericsson (you know - the guys behind Symbian-based UIQ), which will market the new smartphone in the second half of 2008. Volume shipments of the smartphone - Sony Ericsson's first Windows Mobile-based smartphone and HTC's first ODM orders from a first-tier handset vendor - are expected to top over one million units and to account for 10 - 20 % of HTC's total shipments projected for 2008, the Commercial Times said.

HTC stocks jumped 4 % after the news revealed.

Okay, this is just a rumor so far and I'm somewhat skeptical, that a shareholder of Symbian could jump the Windows Mobile bandwagon as well but who knows? Sony Ericsson entrance to the Windows Mobile world would definitely help to see stylish and functional smartphones - running Windows Mobile.

Please SE, make it true! For us Windows Mobile fans it means high quality cameras, Xenon flash and a real design! Everything we haven't have today!

By the way, any reasons why Samsung builds feature-rich mobile phones but crappy Windows Mobile phones only?

Wow!

What a surprise this.  It doesn't really make sense.  Especially since SE just purchased the entirety of UIQ at the begining of the year. 

Perhaps they have decided that the Symbian OS - albeit very very stable - can't handle the multimedia of modern cellular offerings.

I dont like windows mobile
but would like SE makeing windows Mobile phones
i would like SE making both UIQ for low and mid range and Windows Mibile for High end smart phones

To be on par with Symbian WM would need to support 24-bit color. Currently WM6 only handles 16-bit color which obviously isn't enough as soon you want a cybershot-ish non-toy camera.

To be on par with Symbian WM would need to support phone calls and data transfers simultaneously too. Currently WM6 AFAIK only handles data transfers OR phone calls. Thus, during a phone call on a WM device you can't send or recieve neither e-mail nor SMS and you can't use the web browser either.

To ABC123 - Windows Mobile 6 supports full 32bit colour... so no worries there.
