Today, Google unveiled its latest Google Labs project - Google Transcript. Following the idea to be able to offer a simultaneous translation service for voice calls anytime later this decade, the Google engineers started its work already and presented today the first achievement. Initially, Google Transcribe will be able to transcribe a conversation between two calling parties, using Google Transcript for Android. Simultaneously to the voice call, Google Transcript will establish a data connection to the Google Transcript backend server where the conversation will be transmitted to. Therefore it's not required to dial into a special service but the conversation will be converted from speech to text and is available during the call already.

If the called party is part of the Android address book, Google Translate will even show the contact name and picture, if available. Transcripts will be available via Google Transcript for Android, Google Docs and will also automatically buzz transcripted calls during the public trial.

During the Beta, Google Transcript will support all major languages, spoken in the mobile phone industry incl. English, Finnish, Swedish, Korean and Chinese with further important languages like Afrikaans, Icelandic and Esperanto to follow soon after the launch.

Google Transcript for Android will be available later today - free of charge - from the Android Market and requires Android 2.1 or higher, using Android 2.1's Text-to-Speech (TTS) engine. According to Google it's also planned to support Windows Phone, S60 and webOS as soon as possible.

Cheers ~ Arne
