SERVICE: The Star Alliance Worldwide Timetable is more than a pure flight schedule only

While we are talking about Internet access on airplanes we have to first book a flight. My fellow MVP Chris Forsberg pointed me to this very interesting Star Alliance timetable application for Pocket PCs.

The Star Alliance PocketFly Timetable offers the convenience of the Star Alliance member airline schedules on your PDA using the Pocket PC Operating System 2000 and 2002 with the StrongArm Processor.

Features include:

  • Look up flights by Date
  • Global flight schedules
  • Dynamic connection building
  • Advanced lookup options
  • Add selected flights to your Calendar Build your Travel Itinerary and ActiveSync to Outlook.

Have you seen the latest bullet point? This application allows you to copy the selected flight directly to your Pocket Outlook Calendar, that's fancy! Here how it works:

The Star Alliance Flight Schedule is launched as a separate program But switches into the Pocket Internet Explorer From here, your requests run on a built-in web server, as it seems

On the next page you get an overview of all available flights By tapping the left Calendar symbol in the previous table, the Flight Schedule asks you if you want to add the selected flight to your Calendar By confirming this, the flight will be added

Now open your Calendar and you will find the selected flight in the overview As well as all details in the Notes

This workaround is pretty cool and I wonder, why this isn't used and powered more widely by the Star Alliance members. For example Lufthansa offers a Palm download on its website only.

However, there a some features on this schedule I miss but maybe Star Alliance will recognize the features of Pocket PCs sooner or later and will add it. It's related to the wireless capabilities of Pocket PCs which are already available on Pocket PCs:

  • Online check of seat-availability for different classes like First, Business and Economy
  • Online booking possibilities for electronic tickets.

If Star Alliance would add this features too, this program would become one of the most used application on - at least European - Pocket PCs, I'm sure!

Cheers ~ Arne
