Sony Mobile did it first with its NFC SmartTags, today Samsung followed. The Korean smartphone giant just released Samsung TecTile, an app which lets Galaxy customers read and write TecTile NFC programmable tags. It allows to create TecTiles to change settings on compatible Galaxy phones, launch applications, check-in to places, update social status or even make phone calls as well as sending text messages automatically. Once a TecTile created using the TecTile app, the Samsung TecTile can be placed in a convenient place, then the phone needs to tap the TecTile to perform the action stored in the TecTile. While Samsung says that the TecTile app needs TecTile tags, comments indicated that the app works with any NTC tag.

The Samsung TecTile app allows to to change phone settings, launch an app, join a WiFi network, show a message, make a call, send a text message, show an address or location, check-in to Foursquare, check-in to Facebook Places, open a web page, share a contact, update Facebook status, tweet a status, follow a Twitter user, start a Google Talk conversation, connect on LinkedIn.

While the Android app is available free of charge from the Google Play Android Market, 5 pices of the MIFARE 1 KB TecTile programmable NFC tags costs US$ 14.95 and are available online from Samsung USA.

According to Samsung, TecTile is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Note, Samsung Galaxy S II (AT&T version), Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus; however even if not offered for other devices or manufacturers, it also works on other devices. We've just installed and tested it successfully on an HTC One XL with no-name NFC tags.
