Palm
and Microsoft
have a long tradition of being competitors, as a matter of fact, without any
doubts Palm was the number one when Microsoft re-entered the PDA market with
Pocket PC in 2000. However, as time went bye, also Palm
joined the Windows Mobile camp with the introduction of its first
Palm Treo, back in
September 2005, which was just the start of the very successful Palm Treo
Windows Mobile-line. Now, nearly 4 years later, it seems Palm is leaving the
Windows Mobile camp again to fully and only focus on its new and self-developed
webOS operating
system, as Palm Chairman and CEO Jon Rubinstein announced in a recent investor
phone call:
"Given the importance of webOS to our overall strategy, we've made the
decision to dedicate all future development resources to the evolution of
webOS, which means that going forward our roadmap will include only Palm
webOS-based devices."
As a matter of fact, this is the end of Palm OS-based Centro's and Windows
Mobile-based Treo's. While it's quite a sad day for Windows Mobile, from a
business perspective it's quite understandable that Palm will concentrate on its
very own operating system now.
