It took years that it happened but finally AvantGo released a public Beta client of an AvantGo browser for Windows Mobile Smartphones.
According to the download page, it supports Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphones or above but no word about the supported screen resolutions (176x220 vs. 240x320).
Anyway, if you are a Smartphone user and AvantGo user, you can get the Beta free of charge now from the downloads section, after you've logged into your account:
Anyway, as good as it is to have the Smartphone client at least, I'm not sure if it's not coming too late? While I was an AvantGo user from the first minute, today I'm using it rarely but mostly using RSS as well as real-time Internet access (keep in mind that AvantGo was developed long time before we have seen the first connected Phone Edition or Smartphone devices in the market). However, if you have missed AvantGo on your Smartphone, you can get it now and if you install it, don't forget to add the::unwired RSS AvantGo channel to your account as well.
UPDATE: Yep, I finally found the time to install the Smartphone-version on my i-mate SP5 as well and indeed it supports Windows Mobile 5 QVGA screens.
While the implementation of the Smartphone client isn't perfect yet (some of the stuff still reminds me pretty much on the Pocket PC implementation), it's working good and I will continue to use it as my daily RSS-reader now.
Unfortunately AvantGo is using its own application as web browser and the
rendering isn't as good as the rendering of Internet Explorer Mobile (as you can
see above. If you click the "Full Article" link, you will be
automatically redirected to the
mobile version of the::unwired (for sure) and while it loads okay, the looks
and feel isn't as smooth as it is with Internet Explorer Mobile).
Anyway, I will let you know my findings in
my daily use as my RSS-reader.
Cheers ~ Arne
