As you might remember from previous postings, my girlfriend doesn't have a PC at home right now but an iPAQ with Wireless Pack "only". However, last week we saw a pretty good offer for a HP Pavilion Notebook with Mobile AMD Athlon XP processor 2400+, 40GB HDD, 512MB DDR SDRAM, 15.0" XGA TFT screen, Wi-Fi on-board and a DVD+CD-RW combo drive in the newspaper and I suggested to pick it up for here.
Since I'm the "geek" in the family, I'm responsible for the technical details while my girlfriend has her own mind how stuff like this should looks like to fit into her apartment. Not to say that it's a design apartment but everything has to looks nice and perfect. ;-)
So when I entered the shop my first task was to check the hardware details and I decided that it's quiet okay for her (even for me that Notebook would be enough) but the next point I came to was the design. For me, that Notebook looks pretty nice but would you buy a 1.299 Euro Notebook for somebody else without the 100 % agreement?
Anytime later, when I was still playing with the Notebook a sales guy came along and asked me if he could helps me. So we discussed the hardware, price, etc while I've started to snap some pictures with my PPCW.Net i-Mate. :-D
So the discussion started to change; while I asked all the questions before now he started to ask me what I'm doing there and which phone I'm using?
The reason, why I made the pictures is pretty easy as you can imagine - I made it for my girlfriend to send them via E-Mail and GPRS to her that she could see the design of the Notebook and can agree to buy or not. :-)
5 minutes later I got the call from her with the agreement to buy it!
The sales guy was completely impressed how we made the decision of how to buy a Notebook and he was also impressed what kind of mobile phone I've used there. He was even more impressed, when he saw the color screen with a Windows XP styled background and all the icons like IE or Inbox he used to know from the Notebooks there too (keep in mind that the Windows Powered Smartphones are currently not available in Germany and therefore nobody knows about it).
Anyway, it's really amazing how my Smartphone saved me a lot of trouble and time again, just by making 2 photos and sending them to someone else. I remember a commercial from Nokia or Nortel Networks I think, where they showed some years ago how the mobile future might looks like and one example was buying a shirt or something in a shop but connected to a pal via a camera phone. That time it was a kind of weird imagination for me to do something like that but today, some years later, I even do it myself! And no, it's not "geeky", at least not for me because it really makes sense! It's not my Notebook, it's the one for my girlfriend and for sure she wants to see how it looks like so why not sending her what she wants/needs to see to make the decision? ;-)
Every day I like that kind of wireless possibilities more and more and also every day I like the PPCW.Net i-Mate more and more as it become a real buddy for me!
Cheers ~ Arne
