THOUGHT: Vodafone Germany is testing its Location Based Service "Buddy Alert"

According to ZDNet Germany, Vodafone D2 is testing its Location Based Service "buddy Alert" now which tells you if a friend is around you. This service should work via SMS or WAP.

While this sounds like a pretty handy service, I wonder how useful it is and how many of you would use it. I mean I have often the problem (it's not really a problem but sometimes I don't like it) that my MSN Messenger logs in automatically if I boot my XP PC but now, all my buddies should know where I'm?

O2 Germany launched one and a half year ago a LBS service called "Handy Finder" (Handy is the German word for mobile phone) and this works pretty nice as you can look where your mobile device is, e.g if you forgot it anywhere. Also you can localize yourself via WAP or Pocket PC's Pocket Internet Explorer if you don't know where you are - pretty handy if you are in a foreign city (see screen shot below from the xda).

However, I truly wonder if I would like a map like this:

While it might be funny to see where the others hangs around I wouldn't like to be seen by the others where I hang around. So from my point of view, Location Based Services like provided by O2 where I can localize myself are a pretty good prove of concept but not every prove of concept should result in such a product like Buddy Alert.

I know, Vodafone D2 would tell me now that you will be able to disable the service but be honest - how often you will forget it. However they will implement it, at least you need to send a SMS with "Service On/Off" to Vodafone or need to use WAP to switch it On/Off. I would forget it - I'm sure and therefore the service would be mostly disabled, even if I would be recognized by my friends or mostly enabled, even if I would like to be anonym.

What's your thought about this!? Would you use such a service and do you share my thoughts/fears here or which Location Based Service would you like to see in addition?

Cheers ~ Arne
