As we've learned from HTC, the HTC Touch HD isn't coming to the U.S., while HTC also mentioned that some other great products are in the works for a North American launch. And while no further details were give, one of these products could be the "HTC T8290" (commercial name yet unknown). A WiMax-enabled Windows Mobile Professional smartphone which is soon to be launched on Russia's Yota network and  shares some features with the HTC Touch HD but instead of sporting HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA), the HTC T8290 features WiMax. While further details are mostly unknown yet, it seems to be confirmed that the T8290 features Windows Mobile 6.1, a Touch HD-like 3.8" WVGA touchscreen, GSM and WiMax, WiFi g and Bluetooth 2.0 and it seems to be the squarish brother of the Touch HD, featuring a more Touch Diamond-esque design:

It's yet a pure speculation that the T8290 might hit the U.S. as well but with the recent launch of the first commercial WiMax network in the U.S., Sprint's XOHM network, there might be some good chances that the T8290 will hit Sprint stores sooner or later as well.

UPDATE: The guys from claimed they "were lucky to chat with someone who has a sample unit"  and according to this source, the HTC T8290 is code-named HTC Quartz and features a Qualcomm 7206A CPU at 528 MHz, quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE but also - and this is interesting - dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 900 and 2100 MHz, in addition to Mobile WiMax 802.16e. Sporting GPS as well, the device is backed-up by 512 MB ROM and 256 MB or 128 MB RAM which can be expanded with microSD memory cards. The (most likely autofocus) camera on the back supports 5 megapixel and if you view the front photo above closely, you will notice that the device features a front facing camera as well, which might proves the UMTS support.

Cheers ~ Arne
