Also today, during the announcement of its Xperia Z Ultra, at the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai, Sony announced the next version of its smart watch, the Sony SmartWatch 2 (SW2). Sony Mobile has a long history and believe in its SmartWatches and therefore, the SmartWatch 2 is no surprise at all; even if Sony's smart watch story was everything but a success so far. Nevertheless, like its watches before, the Sony SmartWatch 2 is a second screen for Android smartphones that, as well as enhancing existing phone functionality, offers unique new benefits. Combining form and function in a sleek design, it serves as a multi-functional watch, notifier, Android app interface and phone remote control, all-in-one.

A typical smartphone user reaches for their phone many times a day to read messages, check the time, view and make social media updates, use their favorite apps, take photos, listen to music and play mobile games. The Sony SmartWatch 2 addresses this need by offering this user a convenient touch screen device so he no longer needs to remove the phone from his pocket or bag.

The SmartWatch 2 features a a 1.6", 220 x 176 pixels, touchscreen and comes with Android-typical navigation keys. Unlike the current SmartWatch, the SmartWatch 2 can be charged with a standard micro USB cable; which makes it even more convenient while travelling. The high quality materials (aluminum body and stainless steel wristband) are water-resistant (according the IP57 standard).

App expandability is key to the Sony SmartWatch 2 and therefore it can be personalized with more dedicated apps than any other smart watch out today; to seamlessly suit the user needs. It allows to download a host of SmartWatch apps and experiences a range of unique functions - many of which can even be enjoyed without ever needing to reach the phone.

The Smart Watch 2 allows to:

  • Handle calls by a simple touch of the wrist
  • Take a photo remotely using a smart camera app
  • Remotely control presentations using Presentation Pal
  • Check the map by using a mapping app
  • Read previously downloaded E-Mails when not connected to the phone
  • Use lifestyle apps like Runtastic to map and instantly track fitness activities on the go
  • Quickly and easily adjusting the tracks and volume without ever taking the phone out of the pocket

The Sony SmartWatch 2 is both, sleek and reassuringly robust, thanks to its water and dust resistant design

Sony' SmarWatch 2, which will only compatible to Android devices, is an easy easy and convenient device to access notifications from the wrist such as messages, calls, E-Mail, Facebook/Twitter, Calendar. SmartWatch 2 introduces new features as a natural successor to the current Sony SmartWatch such as NFC connectivity for one-touch pairing, stunning premium design and a range of technologies including higher resolution for sharper viewing, better visibility even in sunlight, longer battery stamina, more intuitive interface, standalone watch functionality and a wide range of pre-installed and recommended apps.

When not connected to a  phone, the SmartWatch 2 works as a standalone digital watch; which still allows to read previously received notifications, access the time or set alarm. SmartWatch 2 can also be personalized with any standard 24mm wristband and new Sony watchstraps will soon be available for further expression of your personal style.

Sony SmartWatch 2 SW2 will be available worldwide from September 2013.

Cheers ~ Arne
