HTC has just announced on its German Facebook page, that the GDR2 (General Distribution Release 2) firmware upgrade for its HTC 8X and 8S is now distributed. This means that HTC Windows Phone 8 owners will now receive the latest and greatest firmware update anytime soon. To recap, Microsoft unveiled last week which obvious enhancements the GDR2 will contain. According to that info, the update includes improvements for Xbox Music, the FM radio and a new feature called Data Sense. VoIP apps like Lync and Skype will feature improved stability and performance like the Internet Explorer which is said to become better than ever with improved HTML 5 compatibility.
Last but not least, the camera gets an update which allows to set the favorite Lens so it opens automatically when the camera button is pressed. Furthermore, GDR2 includes many other improvements to Windows Phone, Microsoft hasn't detailed.
At The Verge it's was also reported, that the GDR2 update will also contain support for CardDAV and CalDAV which is important after Google shut down Exchange Active Sync (EAS) for Gmail and its related service like Calendar and Contacts. However, this was neither officially confirmed nor mentioned in the change-log.
As always, the update will be rolled-out in phases and therefore not all devices will receive it at the same time. Nevertheless, it might be worth to check if it's already available for your HTC 8X or HTC 8S.
Cheers ~ Arne
