A couple of minutes ago, good news reached me from o2 UK! They are ready to release the long awaited o2 Xda II update as version 1.60.50 which fixes some of the major HTC Himalaya platform problems.

The upgrade can take up to 90 minutes to complete (depending on the speed of your computer and if you are using USB or serial connection).

Most Important Updates:

  • Bluetooth Serial Port and Headset profile are improved
  • Windows Mobile 2003 Service Pack 1
  • New Active UI
  • Java Midlet Manager
  • Fewer processes at startup!
  • Improved Caller ID software

Who is it for?

  • UK Xda II customers!

Should I apply it?
This really does depend on your own experience of Xda II. If it's working and you are happy with the device, then you don't need to apply the update. The Update offers new features and general improvements and it's recommended to everybody to upgrade the device.

The ROM will be available for all to download from tomorrow afternoon, from the UK's Xda website, and is 2 files:

  1. The Upgrade Release Notes & Instructions
  2. The ROM itself (around 26MB in size)

Note for O2 Germany customers: o2 Germany already released this update for their German Xda II and therefore please don't download the UK version but the German version only.
Note for PPCW.Net i-Mate Phone Edition customers: It's the same ROM version I've already announced earlier this year and therefore you don't need to change your ROM.

Cheers ~ Arne

Arne, any idea when they will be making the upgrade available for the south east asia region?

Does the update preserve any data installed on the device, or does it require a hard reset?

Posted by Chris Paulin on 31.03.04 - 08:25:30

It will not retain any data, the ROM update will erase all the content (memory only not the SD) of your XDA II

I suggest to backup your data first.

Do the upgrade then restore your data and re-install all your apps.

Arne,  will it work with my proximus QTEK2020.  Is there any network provider specific settings in the rom?

Posted by Arne Hess on 31.03.04 - 11:21:45

@Anthony: While it -generally - would work on your Qtek also, these kind of ROMs perform a system check prior installation and I'm pretty sure the update would fail because your device is identified as Qtek which will not match the o2 string.

There are ways to do it anyway, do a Google search or visit xda-developers.com.

Does this upgrade include the log awaited BT Handsfree profile?

Regards.

No, Bluetooth Serial Port and Headset profile are improved only.

What is so specific that this update is only for UK customers?

I am planning to buy a german XDA II. Because I want to use it in english language, I am thinking to just use this O2 UK (=english I assume) upgrade. Can anyone confirm that this should work??

Another comment: I forgot to mention I want to use this german XDA II  with UK rom upgrade in Netherlands on a non-O2 network.

Would this cause any problems?

I have an imate bought in dubai - it has rom 1.03.00 USA. Would this update work or would the clubimate WWE rom be a better option?

Just ran the upgrade on the XDA II. It failed and left me with a device that just says USB V1.02 on the screen. Hard reset just brings me back to this. Can run upgrade again as there is no ActiveSync connection. Any ideas how to get this going again? Not very impressed with the O2 Upgrade! Now I dont even have a phone!

Posted by Arne Hess on 01.04.04 - 12:04:13

@Richard Holbrook: Have you tried to run the upgrade again? Even if ActiveSync isn't available anymore you can perform the upgrade. So give it a second try by executing the upgrade .exe from your PC. Also make sure your Xda II is connected to the PC without any USB hubs in between!

Cheers ~ Arne

I have run the update on a QTEK 2020 and it has updated the ROM. The only issue is that it hasn't installed any new applications (just updated the ones that were in the original QTEK ROM).

I have successfully upgraded to the latest ROM. However the MMS composer programme wont run. When i click on it, the programme name shows up in the top bar for a second and disapears and the programme does not happen. O2 deny any problem and advised i do a hard reset - given i have just reloaded everything into it after doing the rom upgrade, i dont want to have to do that again 2 days running - so i will live without MMS composing!

Any one else got the same problem?
