UPGRADE: HTC confirms Android 2.2 and hints 3.0 Upgrades for the Legend, Wildfire and Desire

Following HTC's earlier information, that the company planed to release an Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade for the HTC Legend, HTC Desire and HTC Wildfire anytime early Q3-2010, Eric Lin, global PR and online community manager at HTC, gave Pocket-lint some more insights about HTC's Android 2.2 and even Android 3.0/Gingerbread upgrade plans. According to Lin, porting HTC's applications (and most likely the HTC Sense experience) to Froyo takes time and then HTC wants to make sure that it is running well on each of the company's devices. "That's not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features", Lin added.

While Lin hasn't given any further details, when customers can expect the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade, Lin suggested that it might go quicker than be expected:

"I don't think you're going to see that really long six month, seven month lag, like you saw in the updates from 1.5 to 2.1, simply because it's a less severe change. Switching from 2.1 to 2.2, they made a lot of tweaks, but they didn't make any gigantic changes, so it should be a much swifter process".

And while Lin expects, that the Froyo upgrades are done before Christmas (well, this would be Q4-2010), he doesn't expect that the Froyo upgrade is canceled in favor of an upcoming Gingerbread upgrade:

"I don't know what Gingerbread involves, but I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas. And since Google hasn't made any announcements as to when Gingerbread is going to come out, I'm not going to make that guess, it could be Q1 of next year".

Fingers crossed that HTC can keep the early Q2-2010 upgrades for its range of latest Android smartphones.

Cheers ~ Arne
