UPGRADE: HTC releases Android 2.3/Gingerbread for its HTC Desire HD

Yesterday, HTC announced through its Facebook DACH page that it's going to launch its Android 2.3/Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire HD today and - as promised - the update is rolling-out now! Android 2.3 Gingerbread - which Google introduced back in December - comes with a couple of important enhancements. For instance was the user interface refined in many ways across the system, making it easier to learn, faster to use, and more power-efficient; even if HTC is using its own HTC Sense UI on top of Android. However, a simplified visual theme of colors against black brings vividness and contrast to the notification bar, menus, and other parts of the UI, even on the HTC Desire HD.

Changes in menus and settings make it easier for the user to navigate and control the features of the system and device. Furthermore, Android 2.3 adds support for voice or video chat using Google Talk and native support for SIP VoIP telephony. The virtual Keyboard is faster, more intuitive text input, improved accuracy, better suggested text and supports voice input mode. Copy and Paste is also enhanced and the overall system got an improved power management with a more active role in managing apps that are keeping the device awake for too long. The camera can now access multiple cameras on the device, including the front-facing camera. Furthermore, Android 2.3 adds support for WebM/VP8 video playback and AAC audio encoding.

The Android 2.3/Gingerbread upgrade is now rolling-out for unbranded HTC Desire HD devices with carrier versions expected to be released after.

UPDATE: Vodafone UK and Vodafone Germany hava announced on it's UK forum and on its German Facebook page, that it's now also rolling-out the Android 2.3.3/Gingerbread upgrade for its customers!

Cheers ~ Arne
