During a Google event today, which focuses on Google Navigation for Android, HTC will also announce that the long awaited and much overdue Android 2.1/Eclair upgrade for European HTC Hero devices will be released later this summer. As a matter of fact, HTC will providing the free update to Android 2.1 for all European HTC Hero variants. Starting in June, anyone owning an HTC Hero will receive an initial preparatory update, shortly followed by the full Android 2.1 update. Google released Android 2.0/Eclair - which features some massive contacts/accounts, E-Mail, messaging, camera, browser and calendar improvements and which is the code-base for Android 2.0 - back in October 2009.
Launched in 2009 as one of the first Android 1.5/Cupcake smartphones featuring HTC Sense, the HTC Hero hasn't received any firmware upgrades since then which prevents from running some of the latest applications, available from Google and others. Therefore the Android 2.1 upgrade is highly appreciated and necessary!
In any case, Android 2.1 is finally coming to HTC Hero even if HTC cannot be anymore specific on the date, as the update will be rolled out across the various European operators.
Cheers ~ Arne
