 The HTC
Touch Diamond's
accelerometer is a quite useful hardware-component if only used.
However, by default, HTC enabled the G-Sensor for given applications only, like Opera
Mobile, the HTC Photo Album or Teeter. Other applications don't take a benefit
from the accelerometer while at the same time, HTC also disabled the manual
screen rotation as normally available in Windows Mobile. As a matter of fact,
you can only run a small amount of predefined applications in landscape mode.
Some applications, like E-Mail Inbox or calendar cannot be used in landscape but
portrait mode only. However, SKKV's free GSEN solves this problem since it
enables to use the accelerometer in all applications and enables to auto-rotate
the HTC Diamond screen:
It even allows to exclude applications (like Opera Mobile which doesn't need
GSEN) or vice versa, to select which applications should be used. In addition it
has a nice add-on feature which lets you turn the device in standby mode by
turning the
device to screen.
GSEN comes with a whole bunch of configuration options and v1.5 is now
available free of charge from SKKV Software. It works on all HTC Touch Diamond
devices, including carrier branded versions like the O2 Xda diamond or the
T-Mobile MDA compact IV.
UPDATE: Pretty good, SKKV's GSEN also works on HTC's new
X7510 Windows Mobile
UMPC. Unlike the first HTC Advantage, the X7500, the X7510 isn't using the -
still inbuilt - accelerometer anymore and as a matter of fact, the display can
be rotated through HTC Home (HTC's Home screen plug-in) only. However, SKKV GSEN reactivates the available accelerometer again which makes it more convenient to use it as a PDA in portrait mode or as an UMPC in landscape mode, when docked to the keyboard.
