What? Can a dream become true to use your Pocket PC as a USB mass storage device? Seems so, at least there is an interesting software floating around now which promisses exactly this: Softick Card Export II for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile.
So far, your PC had to have ActiveSync installed to get the Pocket PC recognized and to make it available in Windows' File Explorer which means you wasn't able to use your Pocket PC as a kind of USB memory stick (unlike Palm devices which do exactly that - being recognized as an external mass storage device).
However, Softick Card Export II promisses exactly this feature for Pocket PCs as well now:

  • Card Export II PPC emulates industry standard USB Mass Storage device on Windows Mobile or Pocket PC handhelds
  • Quickly install applications to the storage cards or file stores
  • Fast audio and video content transfer to the cards. Transfer your MP3 files to the cards using Windows Explorer or your favorite file manager
  • Use flash card as a floppy for any data
  • Fast backup and restore of your card content
  • Perform storage cards maintance. Format flash cards and check filesystem integrity using desktop operation system

  • Windows Mobile 2003 and Second Edition (Windows CE 4.2)
  • Works with Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/ME on desktop, Windows 98/Mac OS X 10.3 or better, Linux and FreeBSD
  • USB connection
  • Supported CPU: Intel XScale PXA 25x and Intel XScale PXA 27x
  • Supported devices: Pocket Loox 720, iPaq H2210, Versia 320

The currently supported devices seems a little limited but I will test tomorrow with some of the Pocket PCs I've floating around here (will let you know more tomorrow evening). Now, if Windows Mobile would support USB 2.0 instead of 1.1 which is horrible slow compared to 2.0.

Softick Card Export II for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile is available for US$ 14,95 from Softick; a trial version is also available.

UPDATE: Seems many users have downloaded it during the past hours and have tested it with their Pocket PCs since Card Export II PPC Compatibility list has grown since I've checke it out yesterday. Many devices are reported as compatible now, just a few aren't, one of the - unfortunately - the i-mate JAM aka O2 Xda mini (which I'm currently using). Hope Softick will fix/support it soon.

Cheers ~ Arne
