UTILITY: Melodeo Mobilcast brings your favorite Podcasts on your mobile phone [UPDATE]

Melodeo, a Seattle-based company that provides solutions for music on the mobile phone, last week announced its expansion into new markets, including making Podcasts available for download to the mobile phone. There are nearly 400,000 Podcasts available today but to hear them you need to connect your PC to the Internet, and your portable device to your PC. You need to repeat this process each time you want an update.

Melodeo Mobilcast simplifies the process of finding and listening to Podcasts by downloading it to your mobile phone, over the air. With a few simple steps you will be listening to Podcasts when you want, on the one device you carry with you every day - your mobile phone.

Mobilcast will be available in early September but you can already watch a demo to see just how to get Podcasts on your mobile phones in future.

Melodeo hasn't announced yet which platforms Mobilcast will support (in the demo, a Symbian Series 60 device is used) so we have to wait to get the answer (I've already sent them an E-Mail, maybe we will know sooner). Also it shouldn't be forgotten, that downloading a Podcast over the air (via GPRS or UMTS) can costs your right arm so yes, as cool this feature might be, without flat fees or a lot of included volume you can forget it.

Update: Melodeo just confirmed that the initial release will be available for Symbian device only, followed by a J2ME version later. A Windows Mobile version isn't planned yet which isn't that dramatic since there are a couple of Podcast-enabled RSS-clients available already.

Cheers ~ Arne
