Following the previous photoview of HTC's upcoming HTC Touch HD, this 24 minutes videoview of HTC's new flagship Windows Mobile Professional smartphone shows you the hardware as well as software developments of the Touch HD. Thanks to O2 Germany, which will exclusively carry the HTC Touch HD in Germany, I got my hands on an early prototype and while the ROM built wasn't anything close to a release candidate, the hardware looked pretty final already.
The HTC Touch HD is a real power-horse featuring a Qualcomm CPU at 528 MHz as well as supporting quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE but only dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA up to 7.2 Mbps. Other wireless technologies supported are WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS/aGPS and an FM radio:

Quite interesting is the large 3.8" screen which supports a WVGA resolution at 800 x 480 pixel and unique is the design concept because HTC left the so far typical D-Pad in favor of a full touchscreen experience. All you get are four function keys bellow the screen but this keys are finally touch sensitive and provides tactile feedback with an additional emulated click sound. However, the tactile feedback is (yet?) used for the four function keys only, not for the soft-keyboard or anything else.

While I had to return the device already, please feel free to ask your questions in the comments below. I will try my best to answer each but since I don't have the HTC Touch HD anymore, I might not be able to answer every question (yet).

HTC mentions that the screen is 3.8inches wide. Can you please confirm if the screen is 3.2inches or 3.8inches?

My fault, I'm sorry. It's 3.8, not 3.2.

A little OT, why use silverlight for the video. Almost everybody (including me) have to install silverlight to watch the video about the HD. Isn't flash, which everybody has, a better solution.

But nevertheless awesome review.

What do you mean with "tactile Feedback"? Does the hole Smartphone vibrate or is it some advanced vibration technique (maybe even local or something like Nokia's Hapticos)?

@Arturo: I've chosen Silverlight this time for better scalability because with Silverlight I can run the video through the streaming server while a Flash video is progressive video. This is for the benefit of all but the Flash version will be back in a couple of days as well.

@Atlan: Yes, it's decently vibrating.

Arne, I was hoping to see how missed calls/sms/etc. are signaled by the LED. Can you please include this in your next Videoshow, as this is very important in everyday use of the device. Also if there is a delay when a call is coming in like on the Touch Diamond. This would be very apreciated by me and I would guess other users also. Thanks in advance! Regards, Brevi

What is the latest on a release date ??, I have seen a couple of early November dates being put forward, but all seem to be unconfirmed. I have taken the plunge on this and pre-ordered.

Sorry to point out the obvious, but the screen is not capacitative. It can't be because there is a stylus with the touch HD meaning that it must be resistive. This is, in my opinion, a distinct advantage because you can use handwriting recognition as an input method.

is APR(acostic pule recognition) because this device have ability to multi touch
but resistive or capastive touch tech can't do it

where is the sense of a reset button which can only be accessed when you remove the battery cover??? normally, when removing the battery cover from a device, it switches of, which has a similar effect like a soft resent after turning the device back on??? seems like htc ha a huge trust in the stability of winmob6.1 operating system...
