VIRUS ALERT: SARS, impacting human lives and the computer market

I really don't want to be pessimist nor would I want to be thought to be as one, but the current outbreak of the deadly virus SARS in Asia has got me totally thinking that the worse has not actually come.

The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic was publicized a little over a month ago. It seemed to be a typical virus alert which could be contained and eradicated in several weeks or so. But as time passed, and as the fact that there was no known cure for it emerged, international concern rose to an alarming level which eventually prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to come out with frequently updated Travel Advice. This paints a gloomy future for the Asian countries which are hard hit by the virus.

Even more troubling is that SARS has affected almost any known business in Asia including the Computer/IT sector. Even Digitimes, Taiwan's IT Newspaper, has no less than 4 SARS related news items on their website today, 27 April.

While some of these articles may not be directly related to the Pocket PC or Smartphone Industry, it is worth noting that they still reflect the actual situation as well as the impending decline in potential business opportunities.

How I hope that there will eventually be a well concerted world effort to help eradicate this dreaded virus immediately. How I hope that in a world where high technology communications already exists, business may be kept running at full steam. How I hope that that these affected coutries may regain their strength and will and persevere over this deadly virus called SARS.
