It seems Skype is pretty busy in extending its service. After the successful introduction of Skye itself adding SkypeOut, SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail (all for Desktop PCs and Windows Mobile Pocket PCs), they have recently started the development for the Windows Mobile Smartphone platform.

However, while Skype offered superior Voice over IP capabilities as well as chat and file transfer, so far it hasn't offered video calls (as you can do it for instance with MSN Messenger). Nevertheless, now also video calls are supported through a 3rd party plug-in from Dialcom:

Dialcom launched a new plug-in providing high quality video capabilities to Skype users. Spontania 4 Skype beta release is now offered for free at It just needs a Webcam connected to the PC, a Skype account and a broadband Internet access.

Once Spontania for Sype is downloaded and configured, it remains installed at user's PC and becomes an additional feature integrated with Skype client.

Video4Skype plug-in offers:

  • High quality real-time Video 320x240 size
  • Adaptative Video Quality, offering 5 different video quality levels
  • User's invitation to download and install Video4Skype plug-in during a Skype conversation, just clicking on a button on Video4Skype interface
  • Establish videoconferencing using directly Skype contact list

To run Video4Skype, hardware-wise you need Windows 2000 or XP PC with 400 MHz CPU, 128mb RAM and at least 15 MB free disk space, for sure a Webcam and a broadband Internet connection.

Video4Skype is available for free from Dialcom.

Cheers ~ Arne
