Ben pointed me to this piece of software from PCTEL which isn't available today for Pocket PCs but looks pretty promising to be viewed and tracked, it's that kind of application which decides for me via which available network an Internet connection should be established:

The Segue Roaming Client application makes 802.11 technology easy to use and profitable to operate. This software enables users to locate, detect, and seamlessly connect to WLAN networks. Optional communications modules also enable connectivity to CDMA2000 1X or GPRS network data services for roaming capabilities between WLANs.

  • Automatically, economically and intelligently manages connectivity between WLAN and WWAN networks
  • Wi-Fi client automatically detects and seamlessly connects user to available 802.11 networks
  • 2.5G module supports connection to GPRS and CDMA2000 1X packet data networks
  • End-user interface provides tools for management of connection preferences, location of hot spot connectivity, security settings and support diagnostics

Features & Benefits
Easy to Use/Reduced Customer Support:

  • Automatically detects any available wireless networks
  • Seamlessly connects users to available networks based on preferences
  • Insulates users from the complexities of wireless networking
  • Automatically keeps client software and drivers up to date

  • Location finder allows users to easily find and store preferred hot spots
  • Allows users to easily transition from WLAN to 2.5 G data services and back based on the services available in a given physical location

That's definitely that kind off "Connection Manager" I would like to see as a standard feature for wireless enabled Notebooks as well as Pocket PC, something that sniffs around and decide which wireless networks are available, with which networks I might have a contract or my carrier has a Roaming agreement and it would take the cheapest available network connection.
Wonder how long it takes that we will see this kind of application in masses but on the other hand I have to remember myself every day again that we are just on the beginning of the unwired revolution. ;-)

Cheers ~ Arne
