PHONE EDITION: T-Mobile is going to release a kind of "xda II" also

As we have rumored here on PPCW.Net a while ago, T-Mobile is definitely working on a new Pocket PC Phone Edition and confirmed it today together with the celebration of the one-year anniversary for the launch of the first Pocket PC Phone Edition in Germany called MDA. In conjunction with this event, T-Mobile has released first sneak photos of the MDA follower (right now without any public names) so let us call it "MDA II" for now.

According to T-Mobiles press release the "MDA II" will be a tri-band Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition with 3.5 inch screen supporting 65.000 colors and will include a VGA camera:

As you can see above on the official T-Mobile photos, the T-Mobile "MDA II" will be definitely the same device like the recently announced O2 xda II (see exclusive PPCW.Net photo below):

which was announced by O2 with the following features:

  • Triband capability to enable seamless use worldwide
  • Integrated 640x480 pixels digital camera and full multimedia messaging functionality
  • Bluetooth and optional Wireless LAN capability
  • Faster processor (Intel Xscale 400 MHz) facilitating faster use
  • Improved talk and standby time
  • Microsoft Phone Edition of Windows Mobile 2003 Software for Pocket PC

So far T-Mobile only announced that it will be available before end 2003. A price wasn't given today. Also unknown is where T-Mobile will introduce the device but since it is a tri-band Pocket PC Phone Edition it's likely to be released in Europe as well as in the US (see the rumor also).

Cheers ~ Arne

New MDA looks great to me. Especially, it provides integrated VGA camera which can let me take photos during my business trip.

Hmmmmm....I may have a replacement for my smartphone again.

This looks great!  With the addition of a camera, faster processor and bluetooth/wLAN it will be a great improvement.  I've been using my XDA with GPS maping software recently which is really cool.

The XDA might not be right for everyone, but with access to email, contacts and so many other things it makes a lot of sense.  And I don't see an ariel bulge on the new version, which is also good.

I had the chance to get a first "in-hand" impression at the IFA with the MDA II. Beside the information Arne already posted in this and earlier articles I got some more information about the upcoming MDA II and so probably also for the XDA II:

- available by the end of october in Germany

- removable battery

- they added a backup battery, so even if the battery is out of power no data will be lost

- improved talk and standby time (battery capacity seems to be the same but Xscale processor is using energy in a much smarter way)

- connector seems to be the same (so accesories from MDA should work)

- the three buttons at the lefts side of the device are for adjusting volume (volume of the ringer and the speaker can adjusted seperately), recording messages, camera

- GPRS Class 10 instead of GPRS Class 8 of the MDA

- SD/IO slot

- connector for an external antenna (car use)

- the display is much better (brighter and clearer) than it was on the mda (xda)

- lighter: 185g instead of 198g of the xda

- the device itself is a llitle thicker but also a little more narrow

So I think thats all. G.

For Dutch readers:

The "MDA II" will probably be available in The Netherlands from halfway january 2004 with consumer subscriptions. It is currently already available with business subscriptions.

Price is around EUR 650 bare (EUR 95 with a 2-year business subscription).

This information was provided to me by BelCompany.

I'm still waiting in USA to get this phone... Unfortunately it is not available here yet... But this is the last point of what you need...

The next model... You don't need it... This one is enough for anything... In few years you may need only to upgrade the OP,that's it...
