UPDATE: Skype released new Beta with WM 5.0 and better low power CPU support [UPDATE]

Skype recently released two new Skype clients for the Pocket PC: Skype for Pocket PC Beta version 1.2.0.89 and Skype for Pocket PC low CPU Beta version 1.2.0.91.
As you can see, v1.2.0.91 is especially designed for Pocket PCs with less then 400 MHz but Skype still recommends the use of an external W-LAN card if used with Pocket PCs with 300 MHz CPUs. However, I wonder what happens if the new version is used with TI OMAP 850 powered Pocket PCs which have 200 MHz only (like the HTC Wizard, Charmer and Prophet). Have to test it over the weekend.

Anyway, another improvement for both version is the full Windows Mobile 5.0 support including improved landscape mode support and support for 240x240 and 480x480 screens! Also new is the automatic language selection depending on regional settings of the device and support for the the new call forwarding feature.

As always, you can download the latest Skype versions from Skype for free.

UPDATE: Ok, I've just tried the "low-CPU" version on an HTC Prophet (which has a 200 MHz powered TI 850 OMAP CPU only) and while the other heard me fine, I haven't heard the other that good at all! Doesn't matter which settings I used (w/ or w/o echo canceller) it didn't worked that good at all. So I still have the fear, that the new TI processor isn't (good) enough for Skype. Anyone tried the new Skype version with a HTC Wizard (K-Jam/Xda mini S, etc.) since this device has the same CPU?

Cheers ~ Arne

I tried the Skype PPC version for low CPU on my K-JAM and it wasn't good at all.
I had a weird thought about trying the regular version 1.2.0.89 and it worked quite good in compare with the low CPU version, try it smile.

Good Bye!

I am trying to configure Skype on my i Mate K Jam device.

On registering i get the message

Skype needs an Internet connection to function. Do you want Skype to try to connect to the Internet through a cellular connection?"

I am trying to connect it over Wi-Fi and i do have Wi-Fi connection.

Any ideas what could be the issue ?

Thanks in advance
