MESSAGING: Microsoft is working on a Windows Live Mobile client for Windows Mobile

Looks like - in addition to Microsoft's Live Messenger client - the company is also working on a Live Messenger client for Windows Mobile devices which goes far beyond the MSN Messenger client of today's Windows Mobile devices.
At least that's what Zack Whittaker has posted on his site. With the "Live Messenger Mobile" client, you'll be able to talk to other Messenger buddies whether they're using a mobile device or a PC. To make the Live Messenger service working as seamless as possible, you'll be able to send and receive nudges, instant messages as well as emoticons (emoticons...? ). The speeds between the PC and the Live Mobile Client are pretty fast - with about a second or two waiting times only which seems to be even faster than today's MSN Messenger. And - keep your seatbelts fasten, you'll be able to transfer files from and to your mobile device, including recording a voice clip using your device microphone and send pictures with your device camera!

With the Live Mobile Client (which isn't according to Zack the final name), you'll be able to click on a contact with your devices buttons and check out their contact card and Live Contacts details (so maybe it's time for me to update my details as well) - so you'll be able to check out whether they've updated their blog and also pick up their contact details from your handset.

And, last but not least you'll be able to subscribe to RSS feeds and view the latest updated feed. For sure the client also allows you to access your MSN Space and E-Mail via Windows Live Mail (Mobile).

Zack sounds really impressed when he says in his posting: "It's really cool from what Phil showed us" but - and this doesn't makes me wonder at all - the Windows Live Messenger Mobile client is expected to run on Windows Mobile 5 devices only. While the platform wasn't mentioned yet, I expect it will support both - Pocket PC and Smartphone.

A (public) Beta can be expected to become available within the next few weeks.

No question, the feature set and the screenshot above looks fantastic and I can hardly await the Beta to become public. Hopefully, Microsoft will release this messaging client as a stand-alone installer since more and more operators are moving forward to exclude MSN Messenger from their Windows Mobile devices.

Cheers ~ Arne

Arne,
you write a lot about MSN live and all the MS goodies for Windows Mobile that we will see in the future... the sad reality today is that the MSN messenger client is pathetic  and, as far as I know, there is no way to download a hotmail attachment on a Windows Mobile device. And this is pretty sad if you think that Windows Mobile is the fifth iteration of the operating system.

Well, yes... That's what the news section is about - also to talk about the future which hopefully will be better than the present! wink

It's not that bad at all, for messaging even if I wish it would be improved why I have all my hope in the new Windows Live Messenger Mobile client. I ranted many times in the past about the current feature set of MSN Mobile (Messenger) and its updates.

and, as far as I know, there is no way to download a hotmail attachment on a Windows Mobile device. And this is pretty sad if you think that Windows Mobile is the fifth iteration of the operating system.

If it is right, it's true but the MSN guys are pretty separated from the Windows Mobile guys. Also I have to admit, that I'm not using Hotmail at all. I don't like it, I never did (don't know why) and always used different web based mail systems. Still - even if Microsoft Push Mail is cool - I use POP3 because I want to have a physical copy of my E-Mails.

Is it possible to use the Video Calling option of your Windows Smartphone / PDA on Window Live Mobile ? That would be great: Webcam / Videocalling interaction between PC en smartphone!

Kind Regards,

Richard Otto

Indeed, this would be great and Microsoft had a similar product in research some years ago already (Microsoft Portrait). However, Portrait never made it commercial and about Windows Live Messenger for Windows Mobile, not too much is known yet. However, what I've heard, video conferencing isn't supported yet.
