question, every PC, especially every Internet connected PC should have a
Firewall and virus scanner installed and with the release of Windows Vista,
Microsoft also released its final version of Windows Live OneCare, the company's
first all-in-one, always-on PC care service. It works quietly in the background
on your computer, so you virtually don't have to worry about nasty interruptions
from viruses, spyware, hackers and other unwanted intruders.
Unfortunately, Windows Live OneCare, as it is available now, doesn't works with
Microsoft's Window Mobile Device Center which is required, to get Windows Vista
PCs synchronized with Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphones.
However, if you change some settings in Windows Live OneCare, you can make
working both together fine.
Before you Start
- Install Windows Live OneCare (if you haven't already) and follow the
instructions
- Install Windows Mobile Device Center (if you haven't already) and follow
the instructions
Configure Windows Live OneCare
- Open Windows Live OneCare
- Click "Change OneCare settings"
- Click the Firewall tab
- Deselect "Automatic change my Firewall protection level when I connect
to an unsecured network"
- Open "Advanced settings..."
- Click "Programs" tab
- Click "Add" and add the following applications:
- C:\Windows\Windows Mobile\wmdc.exe and "Allow this program to
connect: To computers on my network (subnet) only"
- C:\Windows\Windows Mobile\WmdHost.exe and "Allow this program to
connect: To computers on my network (subnet) only"
- C:\Windows\Windows Mobile\wmdsyncman.dll and "Allow this program to
connect: To computers on my network (subnet) only"
- Click "Ports and protocols" tab
- Click "Add" and add the following ports and protocols:
- TCP "990" to "999" - "TCP" - "For Connections: Inbound [local
ports]" - "Scope: "Local network (subnet)"
- TCP "5678" to "5678" - "TCP" - "For Connections: Inbound [local
ports]" - "Scope: "Local network (subnet)"
- TCP "5679" to "5679" "UDP" - "For Connections: Outbound [remote
ports]" - "Scope: "Local network (subnet)"
- TCP "5721" to "5721" - "TCP" - "For Connections: Inbound [local
ports]" - "Scope: "Local network (subnet)"
- TCP 26675 "TCP" - "For Connections: Inbound [local ports]" - "Scope:
"Local network (subnet)"
That's it. Reboot the PC and connect your Windows Mobile device with the PC.
Windows Vista should install the Windows Mobile drivers now and starts the Sync
Center as well as the Windows Mobile Device Center.
