SEASON GREETINGS: Merry Christmas from the::unwired
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:19 CET under 06 - Site News

Dear readers of the::unwired, On behalf of the::unwired team, I want to wish you a very merry Christmas. Not sure how many of you read this lines since it's a good time to let the PC switched off already. At least I will go offline now since it's afternoon in Germany already and I've read my E-Mails for today. Anyway, I want to say thank you, dear loyal readers for visiting the::unwired another year and making the site a great community. Thanks for all your input, thoughts, feedback, postings and E-Mails - it's a pleasure to work for you. Also I want to thank all contributing editors for their work as well as I want to thank all supporting companies and advertisers for their support.

SITE: Introducing the Slingdex Test Scenario for Battery Comparison
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:06 CET under 06 - Site News

Standby- and talk-time are important hard facts for today's mobile devices and mobile phones since these figures tell the user something about the run-time, he can expect from the device. However, as good as these figures are, they are not saying anything about the actual use-time of a device. Especially with the introduction of smartphones, the whole battery life figures changed dramatically because smartphones are not used for voice calls and a couple of text messages anymore but smartphones handle appointments and contacts, acts as portable media centers by playing audio tracks and videos as well as being Internet access devices for web and E-Mail.

SITE: Video Streams now Windows Mobile optimized as well [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:56 CET under 06 - Site News

As you might know, for some weeks the::unwired is offering "Video Views" in addition to the "Photo Views" where either devices are unboxed or devices or features are reviewed with video streams. So far I've used, with great success, the Flash Video format which works on virtually any PC and Mac operating systems, as long as the Adobe Flash Player is installed on your PC/Mac. But well, offering videos on PCs and Macs is one thing, providing the same content on mobile devices is something different and since I've launched the::unwired and all its forerunners, I always tried hard to make the content available on Windows Mobile devices as well.

SITE: Server and Code Upgrade Successfully Done [UPDATE 2]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:34 CET under 06 - Site News

As announced earlier today the server was down for some "maintenance" and in fact it was 'a little' bit more. If you can read this posting, what I hope you can, you read the::unwired on a brand new server! My trustworthy Windows 2003 Server from 2004 came into the years which made a server upgrade necessary. And if you do something like this, it's the right time to do some more backend maintenance in addition. Therefore we've also upgrade from PHP4 to PHP5 as well as we upgraded from MySQL4 to MySQL5. And if you do such an environment upgrade, you also have to upgrade the site code and therefore we've upgraded the CMS from v3.6 to v4.2 as well as we've upgraded the forum from v1.2 to 1.2.15 (whatever all these version numbers mean for you) and had some additional code cleanup.

SITE: the::unwired is looking for Contributing Editors - Apply Now
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:05 CET under 06 - Site News

the::unwired is doing well and developing even better. It's even doing that good that we had to order a new server which is expected to arrive soon. However, what the::unwired needs now is you! To extend our team of contributing editors, I'm looking for *part-time* news editors and hard- and software reviewers and maybe you want to join us? Please note - we are not talking here about a full time job (while the::unwired is doing well, even I cannot pay all my bills out of the ad revenue here) but I'm looking for enthusiasts!

If so, here's what we are looking for:

  • One Contributing Editor/Software-/Hardware Reviewer from each:
    • Europe
    • North America
    • Far East/South East Asia
