TEASED: HP Palm invites Press to a webOS Event early February 2011
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:08 CET under 05 - Other Mobile OS News

HP has invited the press to an event in San Francisco on February 9 where the company says it has to announce something webOS related. The E-Mail teases "Think big", "Think small", Think beyond" which sounds like tablet(s) (big), smartphone(s) (small) and services/connectivity (beyond). Sure, it was rumored that HP Palm might release a tablet anytime sooner or later, and webOS might be the perfect mobile OS for tablets but we have to wait and see. In terms of new smartphones, webOS lovers can only hope that HP Palm will come around the corner with a totally new and groundbreaking hardware design - nobody wants to see a Palm Pre 3 which looks like the Palm Pre, Palm Pre Plus or Palm Pre 2.

UNVEILED: HP announces the webOS 2.0-powered Palm Pre 2
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:50 CET under 05 - Other Mobile OS News

Together with today's announcement of the new HP webOS 2.0, HP also announced a new smartphone - the Palm Pre 2 (which follows the Palm Pre and the Palm Pre Plus). The Pre 2, which will be available in a CDMA version as well as a UMTS version straight from the launch, is the first Palm smartphone with a 1 GHz CPU and features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, a glass screen and a sleeker - but still Pre-looking - streamlined design that gives users a combination of a vivid 3.1 HVGA touchscreen and a slide-out keyboard. The GSM/UMTS version of the Palm Pre 2 features quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as dualband UMTS/HSDPA at 900/2100 MHz but lacks support for HSUPA.

OFFICIAL: HP introduces webOS 2.0 - the Next Generation of Mobile Innovation
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:22 CET under 05 - Other Mobile OS News

HP, the new owner of Palm which just left Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 camp in favor of its own webOS, today announced the new HP webOS 2.0, the most significant update to the platform since its launch in 2009 and a substantial step in HP's vision to transform how people think, feel and connect. webOS 2.0 offers consumers compelling application experiences not available on any other platform, while providing developers an unparalleled level of openness to integrate their applications and services. With webOS 2.0, HP is going to advance the innovations Palm introduced 16 months ago, expanding the features that make webOS great for consumers, enterprises and developers.

APPROVAL: GCF approves the Palm P102UEU webOS Device
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:36 CET under 05 - Other Mobile OS News

While Palm has officially said that new webOS-powered devices will hit the market anytime early 2011, the Global Certification Forum has just approved the Palm P102UEU. Following Palm's naming-logic, this would mean a European Palm Pre Plus 2 since the first Palm Pre Plus was the P101UEU. The Global Certification Forum also confirmed that the P102UEU is designed for Europe since it received approvals for quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as dualband UMTS/HSDPA at 900/2100 MHz only. Interesting enough, again HSUPA isn't supported (as it's not supported by the Palm Pre Plus or Palm Pixi Plus). As always, the Global Certification Forum hasn't given any further details except the supported bands and technologies so at this point, there's virtually nothing known about Palm's "next big or small thing".
