REVIEW: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-QX10 WiFi Lens-Camera for Android and iOS Smartphones
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:46 CET under 08 - Reviews

If you have read my recent column - "Instagram, EyeEm an Co. - or how your Smartphone Photos can become your own Art" - you already know that I'm a big fan of smartphone photography since my smartphone is always with me. Therefore I was absolutely thrilled when the first Sony Cyber-shot lens camera leaks hit the web because the idea to put a complete camera on your phone sounds pretty appealing. The concept behind the Cyber-shot lens camera is that it is a complete camera, with lens, image sensor, etc. but without the camera body and display. And indeed, at last last week's press conference at the IFA in Berlin, Sony officially announced the Cyber-shot DSC-QX100 and DSC-QX10 WiFi lens cameras.

At the still running IFA in Berlin, last week Huawei - so far best known for its 3G dongles, tablets and smartphones - unveiled for the first time its Mediacast HD500 - a DVB-S2 satellite receiver with HbbTV (red button). The pretty much state-of-the-art Huawei Mediacast HD500 has a DVB-S2 twin tuner for simultaneous recording up to two programs as well as the typical slots for CI+ modules to also use the set-top box with pay TV smart cards, such as HD+ and Sky. Furthermore its comes with a built-in 500 GB hard disk to record up to 500 hours of standard definition and 250 hours in HD resolution. However, it wouldn't be a Huawei set-top box if the HD500 would be just another dumb satellite receiver but it also comes with WiFi at 2.4 and 5 GHz as well as LAN which allows easy integration into the home network.

REVEALED: Samsung to introduce updated Samsung Galaxy S4 with LTE Cat 4 [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:46 CET under 04 - Android News

When Samsung announced and introduced the Galaxy S4 earlier this year, it was state of the art. However, as technology develops, Samsung will soon introduce an updated version of its Galaxy S4. As Deutsche Telekom unveiled this morning, Germany's number one mobile carrier is upgrading its LTE network from Cat 3 with 100 Mbps to Cat 4 with 150 Mbps. And as much as the mobile network requires an upgrade, the terminals also require an upgrade. This can be either done by firmware updates or by releasing new devices. Unfortunately is the current Galaxy S4 chipset, as sold in Germany (and most other European countries), not Cat 4 compatible which means it can't be upgraded to 150 Mbps. Therefore is Samsung releasing an updated version of the Galaxy S4 soon which then will also support Deutsche Telekom's upgraded 150 Mbps LTE network.

The Xda comet features triband (900/1800/1900 MHz) GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dualband (1900/2100 MHz) UMTS/HSDPA up to 3.6 Mbps. Furthermore, Bluetooth 1.2 and WiFi b/g are part of the specs:

SERVICE: T-Mobile to bring myFaves to Germany
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:32 CET under 01 - General News

Launched late last year in the US already, it's nothing new of Americans anymore. However, today at a press event in Munich, T-Mobile Germany unveiled that it will launch myFaves in Germany as well. myFaves is a new wireless communications experience that brings to life a customizable, fun and easy-to-use phone interface on today's coolest phones, including Windows Mobile smartphones (and therefore most likely also support T-Mobile's MDA range like the new T-Mobile MDA Vario III bellow) and facilitates a specially tariff for up to 5 myFaves which wasn't unveiled today.

CONFIRMED: T-Mobile Germany announces the HTC Kaiser as T-Mobile MDA Vario III
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:47 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Here we go - I was right when I said that T-Mobile's previously unveiled MDA Vario III will be most likely the HTC Kaiser. Today, T-Mobile Germany confirmed the launch of the MDA Vario III during the IFA late next month (as expected) and indeed it's the HTC Kaiser (what else).
Also, as expected, the T-Mobile MDA Vario III will supports HSDPA phase II at 3.6 Mbps (but not HSDPA phase III at 7.2 Mbps). Further highlights are Windows Mobile 6 Professional, quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as triband UMTS/HSDPA (sorry - still no UMTS support for T-Mobile USA).

REVEALED: T-Mobile Germany to launch the MDA Vario III within the next months
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:27 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Not yet announced, in a press release T-Mobile sent out today, the German number one GSM and UMTS carrier unveiled, that its going to launch a HSDPA 3.6-enabled MDA which was called "MDA Vario III" later this year.
While it can be speculated only though it seems reasonable to expect that the MDA Vario III is HTC's Kaiser since the HTC Kaiser is the only yet known follower of of the HTC Hermes (MDA Vario II) an HTC Wizard (MDA Vario), supporting both - HSDPA 3.6 as well as today's announced rollout of HSUPA. Therefore it's most likely that T-Mobile is introducing the HTC Kaiser later this year as T-Mobile MDA Vario III:

COMPATIBILITY: Sling Media released SlingPlayer Mobile with enhanced Smartphone support
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:27 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Sling Media recently released a new Sling Player Mobile for Smartphone version which fixes the incompatibility Windows Mobile Smartphone users with landscape devices (such as the Samsung BlackJack akaSGH-i607 and T-Mobile Dash aka HTC Excalibur) faced.
The new SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Mobile Smartphone v1.0.5 solved the problem now that also the latest Windows Mobile Smartphones are supported now!
I would say it's a "just in time launch", so close to Christmas where, I'm sure, many Slingboxes and Windows Mobile phones are given away.

ANNOUNCED: O2 Germany launched the HTC Artemis as O2 Xda orbit Pocket PC Phone Edition
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:45 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

O2 Germany today announced the launch of it O2 Xda orbit, better known as HTC Artemis (also known as HTC P3300 now). While O2 previewed the Xda cosmo at this month IFA exhibition, it hasn't lost a single word about the Xda orbit (which was previewed by T-Mobile as MDA compact III instead).
The O2 Xda orbit, which is based on the HTC Artemis, comes nevertheless in a different ID which is called "HTC Cruiser". As the HTC Artemis reference design, the Xda orbit is also sporting GPS as the highlight (together with a FM radio, which is also used for dynamic traffic information) but also, unlike it is expected from T-Mobile, O2's version will definitely featuring W-LAN b and g:

ANNOUNCED: Samsung officially announced the SGH-i600 Windows Mobile Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:28 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Today, Samsung has officially announced the Samsung SGH-i600 (code named BlackJack II), the UMTS follower of the SGH-i320, which was also previewed during this week's IFA exhibition in Berlin. Like at the i320, the highlight of the i600 is its BlackBerry-styled thumb-keyboard which mostly addresses business customers. Nevertheless, it might also appeal consumers since the device is way feature-richer than BlackBerrys are.
Sporting Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone, the i600 supports triband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, single band UMTS and HSDPA, W-LAN b and g and Bluetooth 2.0 with support for A2DP, and printing protocols. It includes 128 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM which can be extended using microSD memory cards. It measures 113x59 x11.8 mm and has a 2.3" QVGA landscape TFT screen, supporting 65k colors. On the backside, the device features a 1.3 megapixel camera and on the front it has a second QCIF+ camera for UMTS video telephony:

CONFIRMED: T-Mobile leaves W-LAN out of the T-Mobile MDA compact III
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:23 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

According to the::unwired information, the recently previewed T-Mobile compact III (also known as HTC Artemis) will definitely lack W-LAN support, even if the original HTC reference design of the HTC Artemis has W-LAN b and g onboard.
Yesterday I've spoken with some folks and they've confirmed what we have already seen during T-Mobile's MDA compact III presentation at the IFA.
It's not clear yet, why T-Mobile decided to leave W-LAN (maybe in favor of reduced battery drain, price or weight) but it's definitely a bad decision, if it turns out to be seriously true.

UNVEILED: T-Mobile USA to release the HTC Excalibur as T-Mobile Dash
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:24 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

While it's not official yet (and T-Mobile Germany hasn't previewed the HTC Excalibur during the IFA but has previewed the HTC Artemis only), it looks like T-Mobile USA will indeed release its own version of the HTC Excalibur and will call it "T-Mobile Dash" (maybe without MDA or SDA).
At least that's one member over at MoDaCo has reported and what he proved with a photo/screenshot of the T-Mobile Dash.
All the rest is known already (even if he hasn't mentioned yet, if the T-Mobile Dash will also includes W-LAN or not, like the O2 cosmo which will includes W-LAN for sure): Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone, TH OMAP 850 CPU with 200 MHz, 128 MB ROM, 64 MB RAM and the QVGA landscape display. However, no words yet about its wireless connectivity like bands and supported technologies.

UNVEILED: T-Mobile Germany to release the HTC Artemis as T-Mobile MDA compact III
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:20 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

During this weeks Internationale Funkausstellung/IFA (the international consumer electronics fair) in Berlin, T-Mobile Germany previewed on its own stand the first time it's own (yet unbranded) version of the HTC Artemis which T-Mobile will call T-Mobile MDA compact III.
You remember, the HTC Artemis is a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition with quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and Bluetooth and it's HTC's first Pocket PC Phone Edition which is also sporting an inbuilt GPS receiver. In addition it has a 2 megapixel camera and the T-Mobile version is indeed powered by a 200 MHz TI OMAP CPU (only).
Interesting enough - even if the original reference design is sporting Wi-Fi - no word about W-LAN from T-Mobile (yet).
Unfortunately, I hadn't have the time to visit the IFA this year, but a user over at the German PPCW-Welt Community forum has posted a couple of photos of the compact III.
