Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:34 CET under 01 - General News

According to Taiwanese DigiTimes, Dell is expected to return into the Windows Mobile market again, after the company axed its Axim-line of Windows Mobile Classic Pocket PCs last year.
Taiwanese market sources indicates that Dell may team up with Foxconn Electronics to develop Windows Mobile-based handheld devices, including GPS PDAs and smartphones
Dell has been reorganizing its team for handheld devices since it hired Ron Garriques, a former executive vice president at Motorola in charge of its cell phone division, in early 2007.

MILESTONE: Orb Networks surges past one million users
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:00 CET under 01 - General News

It's only 2.5 years that I wrote first time about Orb (which is called Orb MyCast now) and last night Orb announced a milestone in its short history: more than one million people have created accounts to use its free MyCasting software. The first program of its kind, Orb lets users stream all their digital media - whether it is on their home PC or on the Internet - to any remote device that has a streaming media player and Internet connection. Anything you can "play" on your computer, can be played on a remote computer, laptop, PDA, mobile phone or TV using a game console.

ANNOUNCED: Samsung officially announced the SGH-i600 Windows Mobile Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:28 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Today, Samsung has officially announced the Samsung SGH-i600 (code named BlackJack II), the UMTS follower of the SGH-i320, which was also previewed during this week's IFA exhibition in Berlin. Like at the i320, the highlight of the i600 is its BlackBerry-styled thumb-keyboard which mostly addresses business customers. Nevertheless, it might also appeal consumers since the device is way feature-richer than BlackBerrys are.
Sporting Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone, the i600 supports triband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, single band UMTS and HSDPA, W-LAN b and g and Bluetooth 2.0 with support for A2DP, and printing protocols. It includes 128 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM which can be extended using microSD memory cards. It measures 113x59 x11.8 mm and has a 2.3" QVGA landscape TFT screen, supporting 65k colors. On the backside, the device features a 1.3 megapixel camera and on the front it has a second QCIF+ camera for UMTS video telephony:

COMPARISON: How does the Qtek 8500 compares to other Clamshell phones
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:04 CET under 08 - Reviews

The soon to be available HTC Star Trek (aka Qtek 8500 and Dopod S300) is a fantastic slim mobile phone, not just a Smartphone and the question is how it compares to other clamshell mobile phones?
Bellow you will find a comparison to the Motorola RAZR V3, which stood model for HTC's latest Windows Mobile Smartphone as well as a comparison to Motorola's MPx 200 and MPx220 Windows Mobile Smartphones.

As you can see bellow, the Star Trek is a little bit wider than the Motorola MPx200 and MPx220 and nearly as long as the MPx220 (including antenna) but longer than the MPx200:

POLL: Candybar - Clamshell or Slider - what's your choice? [CLOSED]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:50 CET under 10 - Polls

Since the first launch of the Windows Mobile Smartphone, we get "tons" (if you can say this in relation to Windows Mobile Smartphones) of candybar Smartphones. From the HTC SPVs to the Samsung i300/310 and the soon to be launched HTC Breeze. However, in the same time (and I'm only talking about GSM phones now) we only got three clamshell devices (Motorola MPx200/MPx220) and the soon to be launched HTC Star Trek (aka Dopod S300). We haven't seen a single Windows Mobile Smartphone slider yet, such a nice one as recently released by LG as the Chocolate or the soon to be launched Samsung SGH-E900 and it makes me wonder why we haven't seen this form factor for Smartphones by now?
Is there no market for slider Smartphones, does the OMDs just misses an opportunity or is it just me who like sliders as well?

However, at least we know now, that you will be able to read PDF files on the Treo 700w as well as on the following Windows Mobile devices because Picsel Technologies has just announced its Picsel PDF Viewer will be optimized for "Palm, Inc.'s future line of Microsoft Windows Mobile-based Palm Treo smartphones, the first of which is expected to be available to Verizon Wireless customers in early 2006."

Picsel PDF Viewer will allow Treo smartphone users to access full, native PDF documents directly from their handsets, without having to convert or reformat content.

LINK: Will the Samsung SGH-I300 become available from O2 UK in October?

How British the Inquirer found out, O2 UK has the Samsung SGH-I300 on its "coming soon" page (together with the Motorola "Pebl" aka Motorola V6) to be available during October 05.
According to The Inquirer, the I300 should go on sale for around £ 79.99 which is something US$ 144.230 or 117.27 Euro with a O2 contract, not a bad price at all for a 3 GB HDD phone with (hopefully) Windows Mobile 5.0 (so far I've seen both, Windows Mobile 2003SE and 5.0 on a SGH-I300):

DRIVER: Think Outside released Orange SPV C500 compatible driver for the Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard

While the Think Outside Bluetooth Stowaway Universal Bluetooth Keyboard driver was already released back in February (see my review here), it wasn't code-signed to be used with the Orange SPV C500 Windows Mobile Smartphone (Orange still requires code signed software, unlike other device makers like i-mate or O2 with their version of the Motorola MPX220).
However, when I checked the Think Outside compatibility page today, I found that they have recently released a code signed Orange SPV C500 driver for their Bluetooth keyboard! :-)

RELEASED: Vodafone Germany is carrying the HTC Typhoon as VDA [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:05 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Following my previous posting from this year's CeBIT, Vodafone Germany finally released their first Windows Mobile Smartphone, the HTC Typhoon (which is running Windows Mobile 2003SE and also known as i-mate SP3i), under it's new name "Vodafone Digital Assistant" (which is leaned against Vodafone Pocket PC Phone Edition series called VPA = Vodafone Personal Assistant).

So from now, Vodafone (Germany only) is selling the HTC Typhoon as VDA "Music" for 49,90 Euro (with a Vodafone 100 plan) and the package also includes a 256 MB miniSD card (not a bad deal at all). Without a subscription, the VPA is selling for 369,90 Euro (hey, without a subscription you better buy from me ;-)).

CURIOSITY: miniSD cards for US$ 999.00 "only"?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:26 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Okay, miniSD cards are still pretty new and the miniaturization costs its price; also more and more users are in need for miniSD cards since new Windows Mobile devices like the Motorola MPx220, the i-mate SP3 and SP3i as well as many regular mobile phones need miniSD instead of regular SD cards (not to talk about microSD) but US$ 999 for a singe 1GB card?

I've just surfed through the web because I need two more miniSD cards and came across FlashMemoryStore.com who seems to be a good memory card online shop but what's that:

REVIEW: Motorola Charging & Synchronisation Station for MPx220
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:26 CET under 08 - Reviews

Do you remember my previous rant about how much I miss a cradle for most modern Smartphones (like the i-mate SP3i or the Motorola MPx220) and Pocket PCs (like the i-mate JAM)?

However, thankfully either the accessory industry has fitting cradles in portfolio or the device OEM himself. Last week I've received - thanks to Motorola - the appropriate cradle for the MPx220 Smartphone which is, nevertheless a universal cradle for many Motorola devices, from E100 to MPx220 to V500/600. However, it can not be used for the Motorola MPx Pocket PC Phone Edition as the blister-pack says:

For some days now, Think Outside is publicly offering the Windows Mobile drivers for their Stowaway Universal Bluetooth keyboard and even if it sounds a kind of weird to use a Smartphone with an external keyboard, there are some good reasons to do so.

The Think Outside Stowaway Universal Bluetooth keyboard combines some of the most favorite technologies I prefer to use and therefore it is even more interesting for me to use it: Bluetooth (the technology I believe into to connect devices) and Think Outside's award winning foldable design which makes their keyboards so handy.

BTAutoSync SP will search for your Desktop (Bluetooth partner) at a user-defined interval - if the partner is found, an ActiveSync connection is initiated and synchronization occurs.

It took a while but as it looks now, o2 Germany is close to release its Motorola MPx220 Window Mobile Smartphone, announced late last year.
I had the chance today to play with the latest ROM version and the responsible project manager at o2 Germany explained me why it took a little bit longer then expected.

Most important for o2 Germany is the proper functionality of their Home and Cityzone indication and while I've recognized some problems with the previous ROM versions, the latest one indicates home and city proper now. So this Smartphone is the first one which will supports o2 Germanys Genion service (indication-wise).

THOUGHT: How much do you miss a cradle?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:33 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Back in the early days of the Pocket PCs, it was good "tradition" to deliver the device with a cradle and also the first Smartphone like the HTC Canary, Tanager or Voyager included one. Now it seems to become more and more common to send the new devices without cradles - doesn't matter if Pocket PC or Smartphone. For instance neither the Motorola MPx220 nor the Orange SPV C500 or the HTC Magician (T-Mobile MDA compact) includes a cradle anymore but it's available as separate accessory only.

TIP: Know your Motorola MPx220 hardware version
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:37 CET under 11 - Tips and Tutorials

Attention ebayer's - if you want to buy a Motorola MPx220, be aware the device you are are bidding for is the latest hardware.
As mentioned before, Motorola made some hardware changes for the final version (which is on sale from Cingular and soon from other carriers as well) and to get the best stand-by results as well as all the other benefits, you need the the final hardware because the release ROMs are optimized for that hardware, not for the previously used engineering samples.
Unfortunately, many devices - which were released for developing purpose only - made its way to ebay and if you will buy such a device, it will never work as good as the the final version is/will work.

WARNING: Better don't buy 'pre-production' MPx220 Smartphones
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:04 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Recently I had a longer talk with Motorola about their MPx220 Smartphone and some problems I've figured out with the engineering sample I got. For instance the stand-by time became dramatically shorter with the last ROM versions and also the external display was too dark in my humble opinion.

The reason, why the battery drained that fast - compared with earlier ROMs I've tested - is because the latest ROM builds (and the one which will be  commercially released) are designed and optimized for the final hardware, which isn't the same which was used for the pre-production engineering samples. While I had around 1 day stand-by at first, it went down to around 6 hours only. Now, with the final hardware, the current stand-by is up to around 2 - 3 days while the ROM still contains some debugger software which reduces the stand-by as well and which is - for sure - removed in the commercial version.

Holy cow - how many portable media players does a single geek needs? ;-)

REVIEW: Think Outside Stowaway Universal Bluetooth Keyboard for Pocket PC
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:15 CET under 08 - Reviews

A couple of weeks ago, ThinkOutside, the maker of the famous foldable keyboards announced their first Bluetooth foldable keyboard for PDAs and mobile phones and thanks to PDA-Point, the European distributor I got a review unit two weeks ago which I've heavily used and tested during the past days and weeks.

As good PDA and mobile phone input methods like "Transcriber" or "T9" and "iTAP" are, for sure nothing compares with a "real" keyboard and if you want to use your mobile device more productive, you can not ignore an external keyboard.

The ThinkOutside keyboard combines some of the most favorite features I prefer to use and therefore it were even more interesting for me to test it: Bluetooth (the technology I believe into to connect devices) and ThinkOutside's award winning foldable design which makes their keyboards so handy.

BUSY DAYS: Argh, our day has 24 hours only
Posted by Arne Hess - at 00:30 CET under 06 - Site News

As you might have seen, the update frequency of PPCW.Net is low again and let me explain why Carlo and I are not that active right now: Carlo got some great orders (you might remember that he is a professional photographer in the Philippines and therefore he is also working for Smart and made the Smartphone photos for them). Right now he is doing some great stuff for the Pocket PC development in the Philippines as well as he has a regular job.

I for myself still working for a European carrier (on some UMTS stuff and more, nothing I'm allowed to talk about) which isn't the problem at all since I'm working for them 14+ hours only. But in my spare time, where I'm normally working on PPCW.Net I'm currently working on my 4th Pocket PC book (thanks Microsoft for such a update frequency which allows me to write one Pocket PC book per year) as well as I'm working with Calin on some great PPCW.Net changes you will notice later next months.

THOUGHT: Windows XP Service Pack 2 improved my ActiveSync Bluetooth experience
Posted by Arne Hess - at 22:53 CET under 09 - Thoughts

Do you remember my previous thought from December last year about Sony's weak (or should I better say non existing) Bluetooth implementation which made it impossible to use my Sony Vaio PCG-TR1MP to sync my Pocket PCs and Smartphones through ActiveSync via Bluetooth?

"While my Notebook works as a beauty to make a GPRS dial-up connection through my PPCW.Net i-Mate Smartphone2 (aka Orange SPV E200/HTC Voyager) this Bluetooth Sony software on the Notebook doesn't want to work as a serial connection with ActiveSync. While I first thought I'm to dumb, a Google search offered me some hints and the most important result is I'm not alone - as I found out at Geekzone."

CONFIRMED: O2 Germany to release the Motorola MPx220 later this year
Posted by Arne Hess - at 17:27 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Today, also o2 Germany confirmed the launch of its first Microsoft Smartphone. However, unlike T-Mobile who is developing their Smartphones with HTC (who is also producing the O2 Xda's and the T-Mobile MDA's), o2 Germany teamed up with Motorola to release the MPx220 later this year (so far it's rumored to be released in November for less than 299 Euro).

SUPPORT: o2 Germany is supporting Homezone indication with the Motorola MPx220
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:48 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Good news for Germany's o2 customers! Today I had the chance to play a little bit with o2's Motorola MPx220 and no wonder at all - but worth to post: it's supporting o2's Home- and Cityzone indication! Finally! :-)

If you are not living in Germany you might not know the concept behind Homezone and Cityzone:

Homezone is based on a standard GSM cellular phone only, no cordless equipment is required or used. While you are on the road, you can make phone calls with your mobile phone as with every mobile phone, also you are available under the o2 mobile number. Outbound calls are charged with the normal tariff, which is, more or less equal, too the other mobile tariffs, available from other operators.

DEVICE: o2 Germany to introduce the Motorola MPx220 Smartphone 2003SE!
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:30 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

It took a while that Motorola finally announced their long awaited Motorola MPx220 Smartphone a couple of weeks ago and so far there wasn't any confirmed information available which carrier will release it.
Today, when I was in a local o2 shop, I picked up their latest shop-flyer, valid from 1. October until 14. October and for my surprise I found the following information:

On page 13, o2 Germany provides a forecast about upcoming devices for Christmas (Christmas - already ?) and beside two new UMTS terminals from Motorola and Nokia and Nokia's latest Communicator, o2 Germany also pre-announced the Motorola MPx220!

VACATION: Checking out for one week
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:04 CET under 06 - Site News

Dear friends of PPCW.Net! Just want to let you know that I will be in vacation from tonight until end of next week and therefore updates might be more limited. While Carlo stays online to take care about PPCW.Net and DubWireless stays online for you to take care about the Forum I will stay (or at least I will try to) offline during my one week summer holidays in France.
