REVIEW: O2 Xda cosmo Windows Mobile Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:39 CET under 08 - Reviews

Soon to be released by O2 Germany and recently announced by HTC, the O2 Xda cosmo (previously known as HTC Excalibur and now, also known as HTC S620) is something completely new for HTC since it follows the BlackBerry idea - a mobile phone with a QWERTY keyboard as also available by Motorola as the Motorola Q and Samsung as the Samsung SGH-i320.
Feature-wise, the Xda cosmo includes everything you might expect from a state of the art Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone. It's powered by TI OMAP 850 CPU with 201 MHz, features quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0 with stereo support, WiFi b and g connectivity (but excludes UMTS and IrDA), 128 MB ROM, 64 MB RAM which is extendable through microSD cards and a 1.3 megapixel camera for photos and videos. It's sporting a 2.4 inch QVGA landscape display supporting 65k colors. The Xda cosmo measures 111.5 x 62.5 x 12.8 mm which makes it pretty flat. As introduced before, with the HTC TyTN and HTC MTeoR, also the Excalibur isn't sporting a separate headset jack anymore but the HTC's slightly different looking mini USB jack is used instead - which HTC is calling now "HTC ExtUSB" and which is even trademarked now.

RELEASE: Dopod officially launched the Dopod S300 Smartphone aka HTC Star Trek
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:14 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Looks like Dopod is the first again. After its early launch of the HTC Prophet as Dopod 818 late last year, the Chinese reseller of HTC manufactured devices now officially introduced the Dopop S300 (aka HTC Star Trek) Windows Mobile Smartphone (not to be confused with the Qtek S300 Pocket PC Phone Edition).
At least Dopod held a press event/launch party today, PhoneDaily is reporting about.
The Dopod S300 is a Windows Mobile 5.0 powered Smartphone, HTC's first clamshell Smartphone, and is only 15.8 mm thick, weighs 99 g and has a 2.2" QVGA screen. Bellow the 1.3 megapixel camera the device also features a second color display. Unfortunately, the HTC Star Trek misses W-LAN like the previous HTC Smartphone, based on the Tornado platform had.

UTILITY: WM5torage makes your Windows Mobile 5 device a USB Stick
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:41 CET under 01 - General News

WM5torage will export the flash memory card inside Windows Mobile 5.0 (only) Smartphones and Pocket PCs as a usual USB Mass Storage device (ordinary called  "USB Disk") - effectively turning Smartphones and Pocket PCs into flash reader (albeit USB 1.0 only and therefore not too fast) and USB sticks.

It was designed and tested with the HTC Tornado Smartphone with the recent firmware update. According to the developer, it could work with other phones and even with Pocket PCs, however he isn't guaranteeing any further compatibilities.

When activated, the memory card will not be accessible from the device but from the connected PC only, as all access to the flash card will be routed through the USB connection.

REVEALED: O2 UK to launch the HTC Tornado as Xda IQ
Posted by Arne Hess - at 21:38 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

As Paul over at MoDaCo posted, O2 UK is preparing to launch their version of the HTC Tornado in the same ID as used by i-mate as the SP5 and Qtek 8310 as "Xda IQ".
Interesting, since the same device was announced by O2 Asia as "O2 Orion" end of last year but was never released there.

Nevertheless, Paul got the word that the Xda IQ, which is set to ship with AKU2 already installed, will be offered as part of a forthcoming Push E-Mail package and will also includes W-LAN, unlike the German Tornado version called Xda Phone (again, three names for the same device from O2).

ANNOUNCED: T-Mobile US to introduce MDA Pocket PC and SDA Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:44 CET under 01 - General News

Now it's official, T-Mobile US will definitely release the HTC Wizard and Tornado as "T-Mobile MDA Handheld" (which is called T-Mobile Vario at T-Mobile Europe) and "T-Mobile SDA Smartphone" (which is called T-Mobile SDA II at T-Mobile Europe while the SDA II isn't a Windows Mobile 5.0 device at all).
That said, both devices will be Windows Mobile 5.0-powered and the Smartphone will also utilize this "nice" North-American Smartphone hump.

Availability is scheduled - according to T-Mobiles registration page - for February:

RELEASE: Vodafone Germany launched the VDA II aka HTC Hertz
Posted by Arne Hess - at 13:25 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Silently, Vodafone Germany has launched a new Windows Mobile Smartphone called VDA II. The VDA II is based on HTC's Tornado reference design but uses the "Hertz" ID (which is the same as used by i-mate for the SP5).
Therefore the device isn't anything new, except the fact that it seems that Vodafone is the first carrier which uses the W-LAN feature of the Tornado-series (remember - Orange has disabled it in the C600, O2 Germany has disabled it in the Xda phone and also Cingular isn't using it for the Cingular 2125).

AVAILABLE: Cingular launched the Cingular 2125 Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:37 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

I've written about the Cingular 2125 (aka the US version of the HTC Tornado) earlier and today is the day where it went on sale at Cingular.
The Cingular 2125 is running Windows Mobile 5.0 and manufactured by HTC. Unlike the original HTC Tornado reference design, Cingular removed (like most other carriers too) the W-LAN feature. For better reception, a hump was added on top of the devices which makes it looking a little bit - well, let's say - weird and destroys a little bit the nice look and feel it original had as Orange C600.

REVEALED: HP to release the HTC Tornado as HP iPAQ Smart Phone rw 4500 Series?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 16:52 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Over at HowardForums, a user called "Rock99Rock" has posted a couple a photos of an unknown HP Windows Mobile Smartphone which looks pretty much the same as the HTC Tornado.
Interesting enough, in addition it's T-Mobile branded.
According to the photos, it runs Windows Mobile 5.0, has a 1.3 megapixel camera, sporting Wi-Fi as well as has two short-keys for contacts and messaging, everything the i-mate SP5 version of the Tornado has as well (compare here - I'm talking about the right device):

REVIEW: Samsung SGH-i300 Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003 SE - Part II
Posted by Arne Hess - at 15:58 CET under 08 - Reviews

In part 2 of the Samsung SGH-i300 review I'm concentrating on the software and the features, after part 1 of the review was about the design, size and hardware-usability.
As we got confirmed now, at least the first series of the to be released SGH-i300 is definitely working with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition instead of Windows Mobile 5.0 which has some serious advantages over 2003 SE. So the question is, if the i300 is outdated already, right before it hits the stores and the simple answer is yes - if you just follow the feature-sheet. For sure, nobody would buy a PC today which is running Windows 2000 only and denies any upgrade possibilities to Windows XP. On the other side, in my humble opinion it is slightly different with mobile devices, especially with mobile phones (and I already know for this sentence I will be criticized). A Windows Mobile device isn't bad at all, just because it isn't running the latest software, if - and that's even more important - the whole package you get for the money is worth.

REVEALED: Cingular to carry the HTC Tornado as HTC 2100/2125
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:47 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

As Cingular leaked themselves on their website, the U.S. carrier plans to introduce the HTC Tornado Smartphone (also known as O2 Xda phone/i-mate SP5) as HTC 2100/2125.

However, unlike i-mate and O2, Cingular will use a different ID (as it looks on the screenshot) which is so far introduced/announced by Orange only and Orange will sell it as SPV C600:

SMARTPHONE: O2 Asia to release the HTC Tornado as O2 Orion
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:35 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

O2 makes it hard to follow them! While they will release the HTC Wizard in Asia as Xda Mini Pro, they will release the same device in Germany as Xda mini S. While they have released the Xda Exec in UK, they will not release it in Germany (and I haven't heard anything about Asia so far). On the other hand, O2 Asia will release the Xda Atom soon, which we haven't received any information yet about a possible launch in Europe.
Last but not least, O2 Germany will release the HTC Tornado as Xda phone in Germany soon, while CNet Asia revealed today that O2 Asia will release the HTC Tornado in Asia as O2 Orion but wait, not with a different name only but with a different ID also!
While O2 Germany will use the ID for their Tornado, Orange already introduced with the Orange SPV C550 (you remember, the one with the music keys), O2 Asia will use the ID also used by i-mate for the SP5 (you remember, more the classical ID).

RUMOR: Is Vodafone going to launch the HTC Tornado also?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 20:08 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Over at, a user called "flywhc" has posted a grainy photo of a HTC Tornado (in the i-mate SP5 ID) with a Vodafone print on top of the display.
No word yet, if this device will make it to the market or not and if so, to which Vodafone markets but "flywhc" got this Smartphone as a "test device" (for what ever).

ANNOUNCEMENT: O2 Germany today officially announced the O2 Xda phone aka HTC Tornado
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:48 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Together with the Xda mini S, O2 Germany also announced its latest Windows Mobile Smartphone which was also revealed in the latest shop flyer already.
O2 Germany will release the HTC Typhoon later this year as Xda phone which is O2 Germany's first "own" Smartphone (before, O2 Germany released the Motorola MPx220 only but never released one of the Xphones which were available from O2 Asia for a long time already).

So far O2 hasn't given any release date nor any price indications but at least a preview what we can await before Christmas:

REGRESS: T-Mobile's SDA II is Windows Mobile 2003 only
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:00 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Oh, that's real bad news! Instead of moving forward, T-Mobile Germany is regressing with its lately announced SDA II Windows Mobile Smartphone because it is based on Windows Mobile 2003 not as expected (by me) on Windows Mobile 5.0 aka Magneto.
This means, it's basically the same device as the Orange C550 (HTC Hurricane) instead of using the newer HTC Tornado platform which is a Windows Mobile 5.0 device.
So no, the SDA II isn't the T-Mobile version of the recently announced Qtek 8310 series but only the Orange C550 in a different ID:

HOPE: Does the T-Mobile SDA II aka HTC Tornado will be carried by T-Mobile US also?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:12 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

Engadget has received information, that the upcoming HTC Tornado will be on sale from T-Mobile USA as well which would be the first Windows Mobile device which makes it from T-Mobile Europe to T-Mobile USA.
However, since the HTC Tornado (which will be called T-Mobile SDA II) is a quad-band device, it will work perfectly in the US.
According to Engadget, the Tornado will be on sale from October:

CONFORMITY: HTC Tornado made it to the FCC
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:07 CET under 02 - Windows Mobile News

The earlier announced HTC Tornado (announced as Qtek 8300) passed the FCC tests. The version that was tested by the FCC had the WiFi module includes which doesn't mean that carriers will release the Wi-Fi enabled version but HTC just want to make sure to have approved all options.
Another thing that Kris over at Smartphone Thoughts found out by reading through the documents is that this Smartphone will most likely be branded in the US as model "ST22A". It is not known who the vendor is but Kris guesses Audiovox.
