How slow can a GPRS connection be?
Posted by Arne Hess - at 10:10 CET under Wireless - Mobile Networks

For the next two days,I'm at an event called "CeBit PreView" where leading IT and CE companies previewing their CeBIT news. So far so good but for sure I cannot listen all the time without working from here as well. No problem at all, thanks to my UMTS flat rate - I initially thought. Just arrived at the conference in the heart of Munich to figure out, E-Plus has *no* UMTS indoor coverage here! Sorry, but this is really in the center of Munich but no UMTS available? Okay, there is always a fallback solution called GPRS and I just tried to download a file. The GPRS speed is more then surprising:

Dear Fujitsu Siemens...
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:05 CET under Digital - Gadgets

...yesterday, Bill Gates officially launched Windows Vista for everybody (not just biz customers and MSDN and TechNet users) and I wonder when you will release Windows Vista drivers for the masses as well?
One reason for me to move to Fujitsu Siemens was, that I thought you are a "serious" PC manufacture. Not only that I've missed you, beside Toshiba and HP, on the stage - as a Windows Vista launch partner - no - I'm also missing the final Windows Vista drivers for my Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook T4210!

So what's wrong? The Beta drivers are not too bad but some drivers are missed, including auto rotating the display if I switch from Notebook mode to Tablet PC mode - so what's wrong? Was the launch of Windows Vista a surprise or what? Wasn't it announced early enough that you leave your customers in the dust now?

Get your Windows Vista upgraded Fujitsu (Siemens) Lifebook T4210 working with Bluetooth
Posted by Arne Hess - at 19:54 CET under Digital - Gadgets

Wow, Fujitsu Siemens really gave me a hard time to get my Bluetooth working correctly. First, Fujitsu Siemens isn't offering Windows Vista Bluetooth drivers yet but is saying anything about license blah blah blah... Ok, not a big deal at all since Toshiba offers Bluetooth drivers for Windows Vista already, I've downloaded and installed after I've upgraded to Windows Vista Business. Nevertheless, I'm not a big fan of Toshiba's Bluetooth implementation. While their Bluetooth stack offers a fantastic range of supported profiles, I had massive problems using the two profiles I'm using most: ActiveSync to wirelessly sync my Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphones with my Notebook/Tablet PC and DUN (dial-up networking) to access the Internet via UMTS, using my Pocket PC.
ActiveSync completely failed (I wasn't able to sync via Bluetooth) and DUN had massive problems to establish and keep a stable connection.
Therefore I was trying everything the past 24 hours to get rid of the Toshiba Bluetooth stack but get the original Windows Vista Bluetooth stack working and here's what I did to manage it:

My latest gadget arrived today - a Nikon D80 Digital SLR
Posted by Arne Hess - at 14:12 CET under Digital - Gadgets

Woohoo, today my latest gadget arrived - a brand new Nikon D80 SLR camera. I'm always trying hard to spend the ad money I earn for site related items and this time I spend the savings to be able to provide you even better product and event photos. While my previous Nikon Coolpix 5700 was pretty good at its time, it wasn't good enough for my needs anymore. Something I've figured out latest, when I tried to make some nice photos during last weeks Biathlon World Cup because I figured out that the shutter speed was far too slow for fast sport pictures.
Anyway, the Nikon D80 is the latest follower in a long SLR history I have and everything started with a Canon T70 SLR I got back in the 80's, which my father brought for me from Japan. Later on, I switched to a Canon T90 SLR to switch later again to several Canon EOS SLR cameras.
In the meantime, I made some trainings at Ilford Photo (the German office was located close to Franfurt in Neu-Isenburg, close to where I grew up), where I've learned to develop films and papers and it was a pretty cool experience. So yes, I was always an addicted photographer (even if I never was a good one) but digital photography made everything easier. :-)
So after a couple of digital cameras (and I'm not counting my mobile phones and PDA here) I upgraded to a Nikon Coolpix 5700 back in 2002. Well, now - 5 years later - the Coolpix 5700 amortized and I thought it was time for a new and better one with an - even more important - fast lens. My new D80 has all these things and since I bought a couple of accessories for my previous Coolpix, I staid with Nikon now (not to mention that, when I was a small boy, I always wanted to have a Nikon because Nikon was the synonym for professional photography).

Vista Drivers for Fujitsu (Siemens) T4210 available - kind of...
Posted by Arne Hess - at 11:07 CET under Digital - Gadgets

Okay, on Friday I was ranting quite heavily about the absence of Windows Vista drivers for the Fujitsu (Siemens) Lifebook T4210 but situation changed recently. So far, even not tested Beta drivers wasn't available but now, at least, untested and unsupported Windows Vista drivers became available from Fujitsu Siemens' European supports pages:

The only problem - some drivers are still missing and has not been released so far - including such important drivers like the auto rotate screen (changing from Notebook style to Tablet PC style) and I still get an error message (I can ignore and thankfully doesn't crashes my whole system) if I rotate the screen. To rotate the screen from landscape to portrait, I have to use the hardware buttons. However, to make these buttons working, I had to install the Windows XP button utility because the Windows Vista drivers section also misses this (and other) T4210 applications.

Anyway - finally I have Windows Vista Business (RTM) running on my T4210:

No Fujitsu (Siemens) LifeBook T4210 Windows Vista Drivers yet...
Posted by Arne Hess - at 12:08 CET under Digital - Gadgets

Grmph... One reason I bought a Fujitsu (Siemens) Notebook/Tablet PC was the hope to get Windows Vista drivers in time. As happy I was with my Sony Notebooks in the past as many problems Sony had with releasing updated drivers for Windows updates and upgrades. Therefore I've decided to go with a "real" PC manufacture this time because I've expected a faster release of this essential drivers.

Well, yesterday I gave the Hotline another call and after 10 minutes in the waiting loop (0,42 Euro per minute!) I got an agent on the line who told me that a) Windows Vista is not released yet (and asked me how I got my hand on it) and b) the drivers will be released later but he was unable to give an an estimated time of arriving. Sounds like, Fujitsu (Siemens) won't be able to deliver it from 30.01., the consumer release date of Windows Vista. That's too bad since I need Vista for testing purpose.

COMPETITION: Apple did it - Steve Jobs announced the Apple iPhone [UPDATE]
Posted by Arne Hess - at 18:51 CET under Wireless - Mobile Devices

No, this posting isn't Windows Mobile related, not in the forehand but since it is about the competition, Microsoft and Windows Mobile might face soon - it's definitely worth to be posted here.
During his keynote at the Macworld, Steve Jobs has announced the long awaited and 1000 times rumored - previously known as Apple iPhone and indeed - it is called iPhone!

But it's even more, it's a widescreen iPod with touch controls (stylus-free), a mobile phone and a breakthrough Internet communications device and not these are not three separate devices but just one!

It features a 3.5" screen, highest resolution screen Apple ever shipped with 160ppi, there's only one button, the "Home" button and it's thinner than any smartphone - only 11.6mm which is even thinner than the Q and the BlackJack.
Apple has added 2 megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headset jack, a SIM tray (woohoo... it's at least GSM), and a sleep-wake switch. At the bottom it has a speaker, the mic and an iPod connector."

And it looks this:

And it shows Cingular as the carrier!

Unfortunately it's not UMTS but a quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE with WiFi and Bluetooth!

And that's how the Web (Safari browser looks like):

Wow... Not too bad for a "not mobile device optimized" website! 8O

And now for the release dates and prices! The 4 GB iPhone will retail for US$ 499, the 8 GB version for US$ 599 (both with a subsidized 2 years contract).
It will hit North America/USA in June and will be available exclusively from Cingular! Europe will get the iPhone in the 4th quarter of this year, followed by Asia in 2008.

Apple has chosen to unveil the iPhone today because the device has to go through FCC approval and they thought it would be better to introduce it themselves rather than let the FCC introduce the iPhone. ;-)
