This could be massive. On Saturday, SageTV announced that it has been acquired by Google. SageTV is the company behind SageTV Media Center, a proprietary, commercial DVR (Digital Video Recording) and HTPC (Home Theater PC) software for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux (quite similar to Microsoft's Windows Media Center add-on for Windows Vista and Windows 7). It features an integrated EPG (Electronic Programming Guide, allows to watch and record TV through TV tuner cards as well as it provides an interface music and photos and even features a place-shift functionality - similar to the Slingbox.

With Saturday's acquisition of SageTV, it's now rumored that the company and its technology could help Google to build-up and enhance Google TV. Furthermore it could be that SageTV features might hit Android smartphones, for instance Google TV could get a place-shift functionality which would allows the user to watch local TV on any Android smartphone around the world or providing access to Google TV's EPG to schedule recordings remotely from an Android handset.

With SageTV as a technology partner, Google has plenty of options now to make Google TV even better and working on converged services for Android.

Cheers ~ Arne
