ANNOUNCEMENT: Palm to present a new category of Mobile Device

I have no clue if this thing is Windows Mobile- or Palm based but Jeff Hawkins, founder of Palm, Inc. will host a live video webcast on Wed., May 30, to describe a new category of mobile devices.
And - this is even more important - the webcast will follow Palm's announcement of this new product at the D5: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, Calif.
Seriously, I have no clue what we will get (Windows Mobile or Palm) since I thought we have seen everything - from mobile phones to PDAs to MP3 player to Portable Media Player, etc. but Palm might has found a new niche.

Well, we will see tomorrow what Palm invented (this time) and hopefully it's Windows Mobile based (and in best case Windows Mobile Standard powered). ;-)
Maybe it's finally the WiFi-enabled Treo we all wait for ages, after even RIM is going the WiFi way soon. ;-)

Cheers ~ Arne

Are you kidding? Please, please do not put Windows on that thing! WinMob is a terrible, terrible thing. Unstable, slow and the interface... I would say designed by some programmers.

And do not make me start on programming for WinMob devices. It is no good. I have been doing that for 3 years. It is really a PC experience.

Sorry for negativity.

Hey, Windows Mobile isn't that bad anymore. roll It became better since Windows Mobile 5.0 (and I'm talking about Windows Mobile, not about Windows CE wink ). But anyway, looks like it is indeed something completely different and not a PDA (phone). So, any other ideas what it could be?

Didn't Palm just announce they are going to be dropping the PalmOS? Wouldn't it seem logical that they are NOT going to announce a new Palm based product? I'm thinking it's going to be a linux based Palm device, showcasing their decision to drop PalmOS and move forward. You don't make this kind of switch overnight (ie. Apple's OSX for X86). If it has truly been "years" in the making, my guess is linux on a Palm device. 760L anyone?

I don't think Palm ever announced they were dropping PalmOS [I'm too lazy to exhaustively search the net].  Everybody keeps saying "PalmOS is dead!" and "The last ever PalmOS device is out!" but really, Palm bought the source to the OS and they are suspected to be working on a Linux-based follow-on.

The PalmOS kernel has changed before (when they moved from Motorola Dragonball processors to Intel XScale).  Application compatibility remains because they just run old apps in a sort of emulation mode (kinda like Apple supports old Mac apps still).

I'll put my dice on the next PalmOS looking and feeling pretty much like the current version, running all the same applications, but with support for multitasking (which I hear is required for 3G).
